Joyce Larene (Frei) Fountain, formerly of Iowa City and a resident of Alamo, Texas died in Alamo on August 13, 2025 after a brief illness.
Joyce was born on February 16, 1936 in Iowa City to Oliver Frei and Freda (Evans) Frei. She graduated from Iowa City High School. Joyce married Thomas Fountain of Iowa City on August 29, 1953.
Throughout her life, Joyce was committed to her family as well as service to the community. She was dedicated to her husband, Tom and her two children but found time to work at ACT in Iowa City, help Tom with his antique business and travel extensively throughout the United States as well. Joyce was extremely active volunteering with Tom in the Junior Chamber of Commerce, serving as both the local (Iowa City) and state (Iowa) president of the Jaycettes auxiliary group. She also served as a Brownie Leader in Iowa City. In the early 1980's Joyce and Tom began to split time between Iowa and Texas. In McAllen, Texas, Joyce was an active with Tom in the American Legion. Following Tom's death in 2006, Joyce amassed over 17,500 hours in 14 years greeting veterans and working in the Pharmacy as a volunteer at the VA Outpatient Clinic in McAllen assisting literally thousands upon thousands of veterans. For her dedication, she was awarded the Veterans Administration Superior Service Award.
Joyce is survived by her children Barbara Ann Gericke (Michael) of Alamo, TX and Larry Fountain (Vicki Krotz) of Plattsmouth Nebraska; grandchildren John Michael Vaughn (Jody), Michelle Gericke, Steven Gericke, Bethany Krotz, Daniel Fountain and step-granddaughter Karen McCue; great-grandchildren Nathan Vaughn, Abigail Vaughn, Rowen Blomme, Enora Mei Tetzlaff, Zindee Lou Williams and Wyatt Wiltse and step-great-grandchildren Jameson and Cecelia; sisters Loretta Snyder and Judy Werth (Jim). She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Lloyd Frei and Lloyd's wife Diane.
Funeral service will be held at 10 AM, Monday, August 25, 2025 at the Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial will follow at East York Cemetery near
Williamsburg, IA.
Friends may call Sunday, August 24. 2025 from 2 PM to 4PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
