Joyce E. Maas, 86, passed away Monday, November 15, 2021 at Gables on the Pond in Random Lake.
Joyce was born September 11, 1935 in rural Ozaukee County, the daughter of Walter and Rosamunda (nee Lau) Tretow. She attended the one room Lakefield School and graduated from Grafton High School in 1953. She went on to study at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa.
On March 20, 1954 she was united in marriage with William "Bill" Maas in Lakefield. He preceded her in death on April 2, 1999 after 45 years together.
For 10 years, Joyce worked at Random Lake Elementary School, initially as study hall monitor, then for 8 years as the elementary school secretary. She went on to work for the US Postal Service, first as a clerk at the Random Lake office and later as an Officer in Charge at local offices.
Joyce was a longtime, active member of St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church where she was full time organist for 30 years prior to retiring. She also served on the Church Council and was an active member of the Worship and Church Music Committee. Joyce was active with the alter guild and with other dedicated members lead committees for the annual Chili Supper, Spaghetti Supper, Short Cake stand, church bazaar, and other congregational activities. Most recently, Joyce was a faithful member of the church quilting group and was on the cemetery committee. A crafter at heart, Joyce loved sewing, stitching, knitting, cross stitching, making doll clothes and attending countless craft shows with her creations. She enjoyed attending band concerts and fastpitch softball games; dancing, bird watching; domestic and international travel; as well as watching the Packers, Chicago Cubs, and Bears.
Joyce was a friend to everyone and cherished her relationships with her friends whether they were 10 or 96 or anywhere in between. She will be missed by many.
Joyce is survived by her children: Dee Jay (Nancy) Maas of Random Lake, Dale (Joanne) Maas of Fredonia, and Dawn (Brent) Jaeger of Grinnell, Iowa. She is further survived by her grandchildren: Jonathon Scholz, Dr. Cynthia (Chris) Fisher, Carrie Maas, Randy (Hali) Maas, Donnie Maas (Sarah), Kevin Maas, and Kyle (Laura Mackey) Jaeger; 6 step-grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents and siblings: Kenneth Tretow, Bernice (Armin) Laubenstein, and Myrtle (Milton) Sudbrink, and special friend, Vernon Boeckmann.
Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 20, 2021 at St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church, 705 Grand Ave. in Random Lake. Joyce will be laid to rest in the parish cemetery. The family will receive visitors at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to St. Paul's or the Random Lake Area Interfaith Food Pantry. The family thanks the wonderful caregivers at Gables On the Pond and Preceptor Hospice for their excellent care and compassion.
