Julia Greene, a cherished beacon of love and strength, passed away peacefully on November 20, 2024, in Boston, MA, after a courageous 18-month battle with cancer, surrounded by her adoring family. Born on September 30, 1965, in Dorchester, MA, Julia's life was a testament to her unwavering spirit and boundless love.
Julia, the daughter of the late John and Mary Downey, grew up in a home filled with warmth and guidance, which shaped her into the remarkable woman she became. In 1998, she married her beloved husband, Stephen Greene, of Milton, and together they welcomed their daughter Bridget, who was Julia's pride and joy. She was a loving sister to John Downey Jr. of Athol, Marian Wilson and her husband Joseph of Weymouth, and Monica Ferguson and her husband Edward of Winchester. Julia's infectious laughter and loving nature also endeared her to her many nieces, nephews, and a multitude of friends.
A proud graduate of Mt. St. Joseph High School in 1984, Julia furthered her education at UMASS Boston, where she received her Bachelor's Degree in Political Science in 1989. Her thirst for knowledge and service led her to obtain a paralegal certificate from Suffolk Law School. Julia's career began at the Mass Bar Association, where she dedicated over five years, before transitioning to work as a teacher within the Boston Public School system, focusing on Special Needs children. This work continued until she joyously welcomed her daughter Bridget into the world.
As Bridget grew, Julia's path led her to serve as a CCD teacher at various parishes, ultimately dedicating over 25 years, finishing at St. Elizabeth's Church. Her commitment to faith and community shone brightly in this role. Julia also made significant contributions as a Peer Facilitator for The Recover Learning Center for a decade, where her empathetic nature and creative problem-solving skills made a lasting impact.
Julia's zest for life was evident in everything she did. An avid hiker, she often explored the trails of Blue Hills and Houghton's Pond with a sense of adventure. Her creativity found an outlet in arts and crafts, and she cherished every moment spent with her daughter, taking her on numerous outings and instilling in her the same love for life. Music was a passion for Julia, with U2 holding a special place in her heart. She was a familiar face at concerts and never missed a chance to dance and sing along.
A lover of the sea, Julia found solace and joy at the beach, especially at a friend's house in Hull, where she spent countless hours in the water or reminiscing on the porch with her mother. Known to be the life of the party, Julia's distinctive voice and laughter were the soundtrack to many memorable gatherings. Her love for capturing moments was evident through her extensive collection of photographs, and she relished the opportunity to travel, especially enjoying cruises and boat rides.
Julia Greene was the embodiment of love, creativity, and courage. Her life was a beautiful mosaic of dedication to her family, service to her community, and the pursuit of joy in every moment. Her legacy will remain a source of inspiration to all who knew her, and her memory will be treasured in the hearts of her loved ones forever.
