Julie Ann Gettemy passed away peacefully looking into the eyes of her husband, Al, at Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa on Tuesday, December 17 following a brief illness. Her remains have been cremated and whatever is not scattered in her beloved Sanibel and near her parents final resting place will be laid to rest at a later date at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, Iowa where Al will eventually join her. At that time, the family will have a private party in her honor.
Julie loved Jesus and knew exactly where she was headed. While so hard for the family, there is comfort in knowing that she immediately went from looking into Al's eyes to meeting Jesus face to face.
Julie was born in Des Moines Iowa and lived in several communities all across Iowa before her family moved to Akron Ohio just before her senior year in high school. She met Al a little over a year later, and they were married just 8 months after that. They lived in Northeast Ohio with their eldest two sons until 1970 when they moved to the Pittsburgh, PA area. There, they welcomed their third son.
In 1976, Julie, Al and their three boys moved to Waukee Iowa where the three boys grew up. Al and Julie bought a home close to the beach on Sanibel Island Florida in 1999. They spent the majority of their time in Florida, but did maintain a residence in Iowa until 2007. After an amazing 25 years of nearly nightly sunsets and early morning prayers on the beach, Julie and Al moved back to central Iowa to be close to family. There, as everywhere, Julie made everyone she met a friend and will be missed by all.
Julie was preceded in death by her parents. She was also welcomed into heaven by her first grandson, Jeffrey Gettemy Jr. Her survivors include her husband of 62 years, her oldest son Jeffrey (Erica), her middle son Rob (Tracy) and youngest son Jeremy (Kezia) and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Karen Bazzocco and brother, Jeff Lund (Paulette).
Julie loved freely and sincerely. She was full of the Holy Spirit and she poured that love on family and friends. She has so many special friends not only from Sanibel and Central Iowa, but from across the oceans as well.
Memorial contributions can be made to your local faith-based crisis pregnancy center, Tunnels to Towers or your local animal shelter.

December 21, 2024

I am saddened to hear of the passing of Julie. Al, Karen and all loved ones of Julie, I offer my heartfelt condolences in your loss. I was close to Julie while she lived in Waukee where we attended St. Boniface Catholic Church. We were involved in a big renovation project of the rectory and church. I recall a picture of Julie holding an item in the basement rectory with a look of dismay. Peace, healing and love be yours in this time of healing. Dena Forret
