Kathryn "Kathy" Ann (Brown) Modesitt, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully at home on October 4, 2023. She was born in Terre Haute on August 8, 1955. She was the oldest child of John Lawrence Brown and Peggy Lou Anderson Brown, both of
Terre Haute, Indiana, and they preceded her in death. Kathy married Richard Wayne Modesitt on June 11, 1978. He preceded her in death.
Survivors include her daughter Luann Modesitt (Erik Heng and son David), son John Richard Modesitt of Terre Haute and grandson Jakob Heng. She is also survived by brother Lawrence Jay Brown (Anne) of
Charlotte, North Carolina, sister-in-law Tamara Ray (Doug) of
Chesterfield, Virginia, brother-in-law Philip Modesitt (Martha Ann) of
Palo Pinto, Texas, and several nieces, nephews, and extended family scattered across the country. Kathy was greeted at the Rainbow Bridge by the numerous cats and dogs that she had loved and cared for over the years, especially her heart dog, Missy. She leaves behind several dogs and cats who are lost without her.
Kathy graduated from Terre Haute South Vigo High School in 1973. She earned her bachelor of science degree from Indiana State University. Soon after graduation, she began work at Weston Paper (Wabash Fiber Box) before taking a position at Indiana State University as assistant bursar in the controller's office. She retired from there in 2017, but still continued several years of part time work at ISU.
Kathy was a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority and Unity Presbyterian Church where she served as bookkeeper, founding member of the Green Committee, an elder and trustee. She was a church choir member and loved to share songs and music. She had a beautiful voice. She loved spending time with family and friends, attending Jimmy Buffett concerts, travelling to Disney World (she especially loved Figment), Pigeon Forge, the mountains and beach, and was an avid animal transporter. In her years of transporting, she likely drove thousands of animals (mostly dogs, but cats, birds, turtles and a pig) on a journey to their forever homes and rescues. Kathy was the biggest animal lover and helped volunteer at many events, fostered animals and helped make sure they were loved and cared for. In her free time, she enjoyed watching Law and Order and reading the Bridgerton series.
Kathy adored being a grandmother and Jakob was the love of her life. She spent her final weekend celebrating his first birthday, watching him, and going to the zoo with him. Even with her many endeavors, being a grandmother made her the proudest.
