Katie Mae Brown Alston was born in Savannah, Georgia on January 21, 1936, to the parents of Ethel Bruckner and Willie Brown. However, she lived the majority of her life in Fort Pierce, Florida.
Katie completed her high school education at Lincoln Park Academy in 1953 and her college education at Florida Normal and Industrial College in St. Augustine, Florida graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1956. While in college, Katie joined Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and the Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society. She received her Master of Arts Degree with Honors from Troy State University in Troy, Alabama in 1971. Katie completed further studies at Florida Atlantic University, Nova Southeastern University and the University of Florida.
In later years, she became a Life Member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, and was the last of eight (8) surviving charter members of the sorority in Fort Pierce, Florida. Over the years, Katie held many offices including president, vice-president, and dean of pledges. Katie's dedicated service of fifty (50) years earned her the prestigious international award of "Zeta Dove". She remained a dedicated, committed and active member for over sixty (60) years.
Katie was a nationally certified and licensed psychologist who provided services to the St. Lucie County Schools until her retirement. While employed, she initiated a Children of Separated and Divorced Parents Counseling Program, an Approved Teen Age Parenting Program, and many other viable programs benefiting the youths.
Throughout her life, Katie affiliated herself with many other civic organizations. She held a life membership in the NAACP and sat on the Boards of the Orange Avenue Charter School, Head Start Policy Council of ALPI, Eastern Advisory Council-ALPI, St. Lucie County Board of Adjustment, St. Lucie County School System Board, and the Florida National Association of School Psychologists.
Katie extended her spiritual life by joining Missionary Network, Inc., an international prayer ministry over twenty-five (25) years ago, and served faithfully in many different capacities. Other ministries impacted Katie's spiritual life including Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, Mt. Gilead Missionary Baptist Church, Sunrise Manor Rest Home, Ruby Jean's Rest Home, Fort Pierce Community Choir, Women's Aglow, Women's Advance, 13th Street Church of God's noon day prayer ministry, where she played the piano, Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire Church of God. Inc., and her home church, Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church. Katie served faithfully at Morning Star for over fifty (50) years playing the piano, and singing until her illness prevented her from doing so.
Finally, Katie's distinguishing characteristic was her love for the Word of God. She knew the Word, prayed the Word, sang the Word, but more especially, Katie lived the Word. She loved to pray Psalm 91. No matter, her physical condition, Katie remained steadfast in her faith and in the authority of God's Word. She faithfully stood on the Word and taught others to do so. In the words of the Apostle Paul, Katie is absent from this body, and is present with the Lord.
She leaves a legacy of love and precious memories with her son, Theodore (Ted) Alston, her grandson, Joey Alston and his wife, Britney, her god-daughters, Willie Mae Hutchins, and Dr. Crystal Slade Hatch, along with numerous relatives and friends.
Katie was preceded in death by her son, Kenny Lewis.
