Kevin Argyle Freestone Jr., our strong, smart, and incredible husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away at home in the arms of his loving wife on Thursday, December 19th, at the age of 39, after a courageous and valiant battle with brain cancer. Even though he left this earth too soon, Kevin lived a full life with no regrets and made a lasting impact on all.
Kevin was loved by so many for his genuine kindness, selflessness, silent sarcasm, competitive drive, generosity, thoughtfulness, sense of humor and the way he made everyone feel. He was gifted and talented in many things. Our hearts are broken that he is no longer on this earth and he will be missed by all.
Kevin punched his way into the earth on January 18, 1985, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Diane and Kevin Freestone. Kevin is the oldest child with a younger brother and three younger sisters who have always looked up to him and who were really special to him. He loved to brag that he was the first favorite child. Growing up as a kid, Kevin loved running around and playing non stop. He was often known as the one to be up to mischief whether it was stabbing a television with a knife, peeing on everything, learning and using colorful language at a very young age, or torturing his younger siblings. Kevin was always busy busy with lots of energy. Ultimately, the family settled in Sandy, Utah where Kevin made friends and spent his years growing up. You could find Kevin outside riding his scooter until he graduated to his bike, going on adventures, and was not scared to get his hands dirty.
Kevin was a proud Eagle Scout and loved his youth camps and spending time outdoors with his dad, brother, leaders, and friends. Kevin excelled in sports from the start. Not only did he love them but he had a natural gift and worked hard. He was any coach's dream. Still to this day many of his coaches will say he was one of their favorite athletes and they have fond memories of coaching him. From football, wrestling, and throwing in track and field, or later in life throwing heavy things in a kilt in the highland games, Kevin enjoyed the competitive drive, making friends with his teammates, and being able to push to new limits.
At Jordan High School, Kevin was not known only as the football star and homecoming king, but was also known as such a nice guy who everyone loved and respected. Kevin often joked that he didn't have many girlfriends in high school, but that all his friends' moms loved him. While at Jordan High School, Kevin won state in discus, broke the Jordan High men's javelin record, earned many awards and accolades in wrestling, and still holds the football record for most sacks in a single game. Kevin is known to many of his high school friends as a legend.
After graduating high school, Kevin held dear the time he spent serving a valiant and honorable mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the Dublin, Ireland Mission from 2004-2006. Being known on his mission as, Mr. Incredible, Kevin loved the work, the people, and his experience there. He admires and cherishes the relationships he still has with many of his mission companions and others he served with, as well as the many fond memories and experiences they all share. These experiences helped shape him into the man he became. Kevin loved and looked up to his mission president and his wife, President and Sister Chapman. They have always been a big influence in his life. Kevin was recently filled with tears of joy when the long awaited Dublin, Ireland temple was announced to be built. We have no doubt that Kevin has already started to continue his mission on the other side. In fact he was excited and looking forward to doing so.
Throughout his life, Kevin was an honorable priesthood holder, valued his relationship with his Savior, and loved the various church callings he held. He especially loved being involved with the youth, primary children, and even nursery kids!
Kevin attended University of Utah where he was a member of the football team and received his degree in Mechanical Engineering. When Kevin knew what he wanted he went after it. It wasn't any different when he first met the love of his life Jennifer while they both attended the University of Utah in different athletic programs. Kevin would not take no for an answer, and after asking Jennifer to be his girlfriend twice in the first 10 days of meeting her, there was no turning back. They sealed the deal and made it official on June 25, 2008 almost 16 ½ years ago. Their wedding was a huge party - one for the record books. Together Kevin and Jennifer complemented and supported each other well. Jennifer as the organized type A planner, and Kevin as the chill easy going people pleasing guy. Kevin was always Jennifer's rock and anyone who saw their relationship knows he always doted, cared for, supported, and served her. Kevin was not big and flamboyant but showed his love and care in simple quiet ways by always opening her doors, staying up late to take care of the kids, or working hard to make sure their family had what they needed. Kevin was Jennifer's constant support and Jennifer was quite literally Kevin's biggest cheerleader.
Kevin and Jennifer loved adventuring together. They hiked, fished, camped, snowshoed, travelled, and together and always wanted to share what each other was doing. They frequently attended Utah football games, held friend game nights, attended the temple, and loved family get-togethers. Traveling and spending time together was high on the priority list. This brought them closer together and they were able to spend memorable trips across the globe. Recently, a dream came true when Kevin and Jennifer were able to travel to Europe to visit England, Scotland, and Ireland. Kevin loved sharing the place he loved most with the person he loved most.
Kevin's greatest accomplishment in life was being a dad and oh, how he loved it! When Kyle, Hailey, and Preston joined the family, they became the center of his world. Kevin was a patient and caring father. Often coaching several of his kids' sports teams, reading them bedtime stories, and teaching them how to fix and build things - another one of Kevin's many talents. He taught them the value of honesty, integrity, respect, manners, and hard work. This last year when Kevin was unable to work, Kevin enjoyed making the kids breakfast in the morning, walking them to school, and being able to participate in their school parties and attend their field trips as well. Kevin was proud of each one of his children and loved nothing more than attending and cheering for his children in their sports and other interests.
Kevin would try to tell you he has never been big on holidays, but the magic of holidays with kids finally got to Kevin. What started as showing love for Jennifer by dressing up in the family Halloween costume year after year, became something Kevin looked forward to and embraced because he knew not only his own kids loved it, but that it brought joy to many others as well. He has made an impressive Captain Hook, Fred Flinstone, Gru (from Despicable Me), Sully (Monsters inc), Mr. Incredible, Donkey Kong, and most recently the Grinch to name a few. Kevin may have said he did not love holidays, but the way he would dress proudly in his costume and encourage his kids to go non stop trick or treating for hours would make you believe otherwise. He loved it just as much as the kids all did. Halloween will never be the same.
Kevin was a family man and loved the role of being an uncle. He adored his nieces and nephews and enjoyed playing with them. Even though Kevin had a good time on many family trips and all their families' busy activities, he loved nothing more than quiet family time at home watching movies and playing games with his wife and kids. He never went easy, and especially loved beating Jennifer.
Kevin lived a life built on the foundation of service, love, hard work, the gospel, and family. He has no doubtedly built a legacy that we will all try to honor and live up to.
Kevin leaves behind so many whom he loves and who miss him incredibly. He is survived by his gorgeous and loving wife, Jennifer; his children Kyle (13), Hailey (10), and Preston (7); father and mother Kevin and Diane Freestone; his siblings, brother Steven (Amber) Freestone, and his sisters, Breanna (Bryce) Brunson, Becky (Alex) Olson, and Nicole (Jared) Heer; his mother and father in law, Roger and Jana Neddo; his sisters-in-law, Krystal (Alec) Day, Shawna (Chris) Chadburn, brother-in-law Michael (Audrey) Neddo. As well as many extended family members and friends all of whom love and look up to him. Kevin is preceded in death by several loved ones including all his grandparents who we know are welcoming him home with loving arms.
Words cannot adequately express our gratitude to the countless individuals, friends, family members, and neighbors who showed such friendship and loving compassion for Kevin and his family and for those who provided incredible care for his medical needs.
Loving gratitude is expressed to his Doctors, PA, and the entire staff at the Huntsman's Cancer Institute. Also, a special thank you to his fantastic hospice nurses for their devotion and compassionate care to Kevin and his family during his last few weeks.
