Kunwar Prasad Bhatnagar

Dr. Kunwar Prasad Bhatnagar, 87, passed away at home Wednesday, November 17, 2021, surrounded by his family.
Dr. Bhatnagar is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mrs. Indu Bhatnagar, daughters, Dr. Divya Cantor and Dr. Jyoti Burruss, son-in-laws, David Cantor and Dave Burruss, grandchildren, Alec Rouben, Dr. Cami Burruss, Matthew Burruss, Clayton Burruss and Natalie Pregliasco and Joe Pregliasco with great grandchildren Louis and Jolie Pregliasco along with brothers Mahesh Bhatnagar, Chanda Bhatnagar and Kishan Bhatnagar, and many nieces and nephews residing in India, US and around the world. His late parents are Mr. Narain Swaroop Bhatnagar and Mrs. Bhagwati Devi and late brothers are Dr. Kailash Bhatnagar, Ganesh Bhatnagar, and late sister, Mrs. Raj Dulari.
His early education was in India where he received his Bachelor of Science at Agra University in 1956. His Master of Science degree was awarded with honors in Zoology in 1958 from Vikram University in India. He came to the United States to State University of New York at Buffalo and studied under the direction of the distinguished Professor Frank Kallen. He received his PhD in Anatomy in 1972 and became an Assistant Professor of Anatomy at the University of Louisville School of Medicine and Dentistry in the same year, with promotion to Associate Professor in 1978, and became full Professor of Anatomical Sciences and Neurobiology at the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1985.
His industrious and prolific career in teaching and research continued even past his achieving Professor Emeritus status at the University of Louisville. Dr. Bhatnagar's passion for education and the pursuit of excellence has served many UofL medical students and created a powerful testament to the success of his career as a professor and mentor to now more than 5,000 doctors practicing medicine. He lived a life leading by example, teaching us that caring about our patients was the real reason we do what we do.
His areas of interest have included electron microscopy of olfactory and accessory olfactory systems; morphology of the vomeronasal organ in bats and humans; comparative morphology and ultra structure of the human an chiropteran pineal gland; anatomical, electrophysiological and behavioral studies on the olfactory systems of representative animals with emphasis on bats; studies on the rhinencephalon and the cardiac conduction system in bats; and studies in human anatomical development. This scope of research has resulted in over 120 scientific publications and reports.
Visitation will be held 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Thursday, November 18, 2021, at Ratterman and Sons, 3800 Bardstown Road, with ceremonial cremation to follow for the immediate family.
