Date of Birth: September 30, 1943
BRUNSWICK - Larry "Joe" Guest 71 of Brunswick died on Thursday, January 15 at his home in Brunswick following a long and chronic illness. The son of Norwood H. and Arline M. Guest, Joe was born September 30th, 1943, and was raised in the Canton, Ohio area. Always proud of his Ohio roots, he was an avid Ohio State and Cleveland Browns football fan. Following graduation from Jackson High School, Joe enrolled in courses at Miami University. In 1964, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving four years in Texas, Minnesota, Michigan, Vietnam, and South Dakota respectively. Following his military experience, Joe enrolled in classes at Kent State University, earning his BA in Special Education (1973), and his Graduate Degree in School Counseling in 1978 where he met and later married Nancy Huffman.
Because of his love for the sea, Joe and Nancy moved to Maine in 1982 and began their life in Union. He worked at Georges Valley High School before moving to Brunswick in 1987 where he was a high school counselor until his retirement in 2007. After retirement Joe continued to help guide young adults when he worked part time at Southern Maine Community College Bath Campus. He was recognized in Ohio as a Martha Holden Jennings Foundation Scholar and he was the recipient of the 2006 Maine State Counselor of the Year Award. Joe truly loved his profession and his work with young people. He was well known by both students and adults for his witty humor and gentle approach to life.
Joe is survived by his loving wife Nancy and their two daughters Lindsay of Boston and Sarah of Waltham, Massachusetts. Joe is also survived by his brother, Ned Guest and his wife, Sue, of Canton, OH, two sisters, Jane Guest of Canton, OH and Alice Mae Orr of Darien, CT and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Joe's life for family and friends will be held at the home of Mike and Moreen Halmo on Saturday, January 24th from 1:00 to 4:00.
At the family's request, in lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made payable to the Brunswick High School-Joe Guest Memorial Fund. Please mail to Brunswick High School c/o The Counseling Office, 116 Maquoit Road, Brunswick, ME 04011.
