Lawrence Joseph Nohra was born November 22, 1936, in Lockhart, Texas. He was the third child born to Isaac and Marie Joseph Nohra. He passed away surrounded by his loving family on June 27, 2025, at his home in Temple, Texas. We grieve this tremendous loss of a truly strong and holy man who lived his life honoring his wife of 63 years, Margie Vajdak Nohra, his family and God.
Larry was an intelligent man and always had a sharp mind. He was a man of many talents, and he was a role model to many. Larry never met a stranger and was fluent in Arabic, Spanish and English. Larry owned and operated Nohra Produce Company in Austin along with his parents. He was known and respected by many restauranters who also called him friend. Larry later opened the well-known Country Shack Tavern in Austin where the best burgers, tacos and fun were served.
He loved telling stories about his life, his parent's life, and his ancestral roots originating in Lebanon. Larry was so happy he was able to travel to Lebanon on more than one occasion, and he enjoyed staying with his family in Hakel, Lebanon. Larry truly loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and going camping in the Rocky Mountains. He was known as a sharpshooter and once killed 17 doves in one shot. He loved music and dancing. Larry would sing to sounds like Ernest Tubb, but he looked like Elvis Presley. He could whistle to any tune and did it beautifully. This gave him the nickname of "Larry the Canary".
Larry was known as Giddee to his grandchildren, and he especially enjoyed teaching them and instilling the importance of God, lessons in life, and the importance of education, family and working hard to achieve success in life. He also had certain sayings such as: The cream rises to the top and it's lonely at the top; You have to crawl before you can walk, walk before you can run; Never put off until tomorrow what you can do today; Never put more than you can eat on your plate, and always eat whatever you put on your plate.
He was proud of the life he created with his wife, his children and grandchildren. Larry was a very strong practicing Catholic and had an unwavering faith in God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. He always gave thanks to our lord and made sure his children, grandchildren and even great grandchildren knew the Lord and had a strong faith.
He was proceeded in death by his son Lawrence Joseph Nohra Jr., parents Isaac and Marie Joseph Nohra, brothers Isaac and Philip Nohra, sisters Ester Nohra, Matilda Attal, and grandson Josh. He is survived by his wife Margie Vajdak Nohra, daughter and son-in-law Carla and David Welch, grandchildren Bryan, Victoria (husband Kyle Zeien), and Alexander Welch, great grandchildren Hunter, Londyn, Roman, and Reece Welch and one on the way. Daughter Marie Arnold, and granddaughter Lisa (husband Jason Hanson) and children, sisters Doris Nohra Joseph and Lola Nohra Larivee.
A funeral Mass will be held at St. Luke's Catholic Church in Temple on Monday, June 30, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. with a burial to follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Cyclone. The family will be accepting visitors one hour prior to the service. The rosary will be recited starting at 10 a.m.
Hewett-Arney Funeral Home of Temple is entrusted with these arrangements.
