Lawrence Jay Stewart, a cherished family man, respected veteran, and a joy to all who knew him, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2025, in San Antonio, Texas at the age of 97. Born on October 13, 1927, in Franklin, Kentucky, to the late William Edgar Stewart and Annie Hendricks Stewart, Lawrence's life was a testament to strength, integrity, and love.

Raised on his family's tobacco farm in Franklin, Kentucky with his 11 siblings, Lawrence learned the values of hard work and perseverance. He carried these values throughout his life, speaking proudly of his humble beginnings and the many lessons learned during those early years. In 1945, he was drafted into the USAAF and later re-enlisted. He married his sweetheart, Betty, and together they embarked on a life of service to their country. For 22 years, Lawrence devoted himself to the military, a period during which he and his family were stationed in various states across the country, as well as in England.

Following his military retirement, Lawrence embarked on a second career with Swearingen/Fairchild, where he helped build planes for another 20 years. His industrious spirit didn't allow him to settle into rest, leading him to help Betty in running their local family business, Betty's Cut-n-Curl Beauty Salon.

Lawrence's talents extended beyond his professional life. He was a gifted woodworker, creating everything from a beautiful gazebo that became the heart of family barbecues to intricate walnut figurines and a stunning replica of his childhood home encased in a glass bottle. He was often seen with a camcorder in hand, documenting precious family moments and the antics of backyard wildlife.

In his leisure, Lawrence was an active Master Mason with the Alzafar Shriners. He took great delight in driving his little Red Roaster car in parades, mastering car drills, especially his favorite, the figure 8. He also cherished the times spent at Camp Alzafar in Boerne, Texas, where dancing and socializing were among his favorite pastimes.

Proud of his roots, Lawrence made it a point to travel back to Franklin, Kentucky, every year for the Stewart Family Reunion. There, he reconnected with 'Kinfolk' and tended to the family plots at the local cemetery, ensuring the heritage and memories of his lineage were preserved.

Known for his quick wit and infectious smile, Lawrence never met a stranger and was always ready to extend a helping hand. His presence brought light and laughter to any gathering, and his love for his family was boundless.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 68 years, Betty Jane (Ryder) Stewart, and their son Jay Lawrence Stewart. His legacy continues through his son Dwight Stewart, daughter Janis Stewart, both of San Antonio, Texas, his six grandchildren, Shannon Hilburn (Kenny), Cindy Wernette (Scott), Wendy Linnemeier (Craig), Wayne Wernette JR, Lisa Atwood (Gary), and Vicki Stewart (Ethan), and his 11 great-grandchildren, Kendall, Emily, Caleb (Rachelle), Nathan, Millie (Reed), Alaina, Tredent, Leonora, Emma, Addison, and Christian.

Lawrence Jay Stewart, our dear Papa, was loved by many and will be profoundly missed. His memory will continue to inspire those who were fortunate to know him. Until we meet again in heaven, Papa, keep smiling!
