Lawrence F. "Larry" Wainman, 79, of Windsor, passed away on Tuesday February 4, 2025. Larry was a strong, proud man, he was born in Hartford April 13, 1945. He grew up in Elfrida, Arizona, where he was a football captain prior to graduating in 1963. He was drafted at the age of 17 into the Army 101st Airborne division and served honorably from 1963-1966.
After his service to his country, he moved back to Simsbury where he met and married his loving wife Shirley (Allshouse) Wainmain in 1968, they were married for 57 years.
Larry was self-employed and worked as a carpet installer with his brother Walt (Walt's Carpet Service) for 39 years.
He battled colorectal cancer in 2009 but was cancer free until 2019 when he was diagnosed with Kidney failure. He did dialysis for six years at Davita in Bloomfield where he enjoyed the staff who took great care of him and made new friends.
He loved golfing with great friends and family, always vacationing near water, be it a lake or ocean where he loved basking in the sun to get that tan. Nephews called him Popeye for his strength. He and his brother Walt spent almost every day talking about that day's event or reminiscing and laughing over a couple of beers.
He enjoyed going to Lake George, NY two or three times a year where he met many friends. The last few years his two nieces Patty and Kim drove him to Lake George. His special place to vacation, always picked on them about their driving, could have been there two hours ago if I were driving. Always looked forward to his family to visit from out west every summer. Niece Celeste would bring Nesn her Pug to visit and sat with him in his last week.
He loved to pick on everyone and joke around. He loved to tell stories, most wondered if they were true or not "Mostly Not" and he would bust out with a contagious laugh.
He leaves a brother Walt Wainmain of Windsor, sister-in-law Joan Wainman of E. Hartland, sister-in-law Alice and Charlie Kopcinski of E. Granby, half-sister Debbie and Dan McWilliams of Coolidge, AZ, Angie McWilliams of Elfrida AZ, half-brother Joe and Trisha McDonald of Tucson, AZ, Step-sister Doreen Lang of Chicago, IL.
Many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends, he had a special place in his heart for his nephew Bobby and wife Laurie who were there almost every morning in his last few weeks to see him off to dialysis and be there when he returned. He words were always "Is Bobby coming?"
He will truly be missed, everyone that knew him will have memories that will bring a smile.
A graveside service for Larry with full military honors will be held at a later date at Granby Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Larry's memory may be made to a charity of your choosing. For condolences please visit www.carmonfuneralhome.com.
