Linda Darlene Newell Swaringen, 78, of Charlotte, passed away on Friday, February 16 th, 2024. Born in Mint Hill, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina to Herman Franklin and Ruby Belk Newell while her father was serving in the Army during World War II, Linda was the second of their four children. Growing up, she attended Bain School and East Mecklenburg High School. Linda was a bright student who excelled in her studies and made and kept lifelong friends.
After meeting the love of her life Larry Franklin Swaringen, they married in June of 1962, and she moved to the Long Creek Township of Mecklenburg County where they went on to build a beautiful home and life together.
As a young woman, Linda became an expert at typing and 10-key, though she eventually stepped away from the business world to work alongside her husband, carrying out several successful entrepreneurial ventures. Over the years she kept meticulous records and served as the secretary and accountant for their various companies, most recognizably Swaringen Grading, Larry F. Swaringen Construction, Inc., and Lakeview Road Landfill, Inc.
Never one to be idle, Linda was talented at everything she set out to do. Her handwriting is a work of art, the backs of her finished cross stitch pieces often looked as good as the fronts, she could sew whatever anyone could dream up, and her crochet stitches were perfect in tension and structure. No matter what craft or DIY project she set out to tackle, it was always completed with precision, excellence, and beauty.
Linda was the most loving and devoted mother that could be imagined, balancing coveted wisdom sharing with steadfast support for each of her three children who count her being their mother as one of their greatest blessings in life. She instilled in each of them a love of learning, critical thinking skills, and a desire to help and serve others well.
Her greatest joys were spending time with family and friends and celebrating the talents and accomplishments of her children and grandchildren. Servant-hearted and compassionate, Linda was always available to help loved ones with whatever needs they had.
Linda was preceded in death by her mother and father, and each of her three siblings: Steve Gordon Newell, Roy Earl Newell, and Donna Irene Newell Burnette.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Larry Franklin Swaringen; their children: Kevin McKee Swaringen (and wife Chanda) of Lincolnton, NC, Sherri Swaringen Barth (and husband Danny) of Charlotte, NC, and Shelly Lynn Black (and husband Daniel) of Charlotte, NC; and 10 adoring grandchildren: Christopher McKee Swaringen, Katherine Mackenzie Swaringen, Samantha Leigh Barth, Lawrence Jay Barth, Melinda Kay Barth, Emmalyn Joy Barth, Josephine Faith Barth, Theodore Jude Barth, Abigail Grace Black, and Jacob Anakin Black.
The family will be honored to receive friends from 1:00 until 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 22 nd, 2024 at Trinity United Methodist Church, in the Family Life Center. A funeral service will follow at 2:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary, with a graveside committal after in the Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery.
