With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Herbert Edwards III, who departed this life early Sunday morning, June 29, 2025, at the age of 67. A devoted husband, father, businessman, and servant of his community, Herbert's legacy is one of hard work, faith, and unwavering love for his family.
Born on March 19, 1958, to the late Lillie Edwards (Wilson, NC) and Herbert Edwards Jr. (Smithfield, VA), Herbert was educated in the Norfolk Public School System and graduated from Lake Taylor High School. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Social Work from Norfolk State University-an accomplishment that laid the foundation for a life of purpose, service, and independence.
Herbert began his professional journey with the United States Postal Service, but his entrepreneurial spirit soon led him to pursue his true passion. What started as a part-time landscaping venture grew into Edwards Greenscapes, a thriving commercial and residential landscaping and hauling business that proudly served the community for over 35 years. Herbert was deeply committed to his work, and he continued running his business-always hands-on, always present-until the very day he passed.
He was a faithful and longstanding member of Second Calvary Baptist Church, where he served in the videography ministry in earlier years and lovingly maintained the church grounds, properties, and the pastor's lawn with care and pride.
Though Herbert battled multiple health challenges over the years-including multiple strokes, prostate cancer and congestive heart failure-he remained resilient, determined, and hard-working. Even in the face of pain, he showed up for his family and his community with quiet strength. We take comfort in knowing that he is now resting-his body no longer fighting, his spirit at peace.
Herbert is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Carolyn Edwards; his two daughters, Sierra B. Edwards and Brianna A. Edwards, all of Norfolk, VA; his father-in-law, Willie Jarman; mother-in-law, Daisy Jarman; brother-in-law, James Jarman II, and a host of cherished aunts, cousins, extended family members, and friends who will miss his sharp wit, loyal heart, and unwavering work ethic.
Though he worked tirelessly-even into the evening hours-Herbert's greatest joy came from sharing a meal and laughter with the ones he loved. His hands built a business, but his heart built a home full of warmth, discipline, and devotion. His absence leaves a deep void, but his spirit remains in every lawn he shaped, every lesson he taught, and every life he touched.
May he rest in eternal peace and well-earned rest.
