Born on February 19, 1936, in rural Monroe County, Lloyd was the son of Roy and Honor Hazel (Estlack) Major. He grew up working on the family farm, developed lifelong friendships, and graduated from Chariton High School in 1955. On May 24, 1956, he married his high school sweetheart Helen Walsh, and together they raised six children (Lisa, David, Dan, Todd, Heidi, and Jennifer) and shared over 50 years of marriage.
Lloyd worked at the Ford Garage in Chariton before building a long career with Hy-Vee as a meat cutter and meat department manager. He retired as a federal meat inspector. Known for his kindness, generosity, and love of people, Lloyd was a devoted husband, father, grandpa, and great-grandpa. He loved spending time with family and friends, tending his bountiful garden, playing cribbage, and attending auctions.
Lloyd was preceded in death by his beloved wife Helen in 2009; daughter Jennifer in 2015; parents Roy and Hazel; sisters Yvonne and Eula; and brothers LeRoy and Paul.
He leaves behind a grateful and loving family: his children Lisa (Scott) Major Beeman of Ankeny; David (Tammy) Major of Des Moines; Dan Major of Chariton; Todd Major of Elkhart; and Heidi (Darren) Major Sleister of Ankeny. Lloyd was a proud grandfather to Amanda Major, Nick (Emily) Major, Raven (Brad) Wanicki, Colton (Lily) Sleister, Ryan Sleister, and Jonathan Major Beeman; and great-grandfather to Mercedes Lane, Liam Bradley, and Brayden Wanicki. He is remembered fondly by many extended family members and friends whose lives he touched with kindness.
Lloyd's family extends heartfelt thanks to family and friends who have offered prayers, love, and support. We love you, Dad and Grandpa. To send flowers to the family of Lloyd, please visit our floral store.
