Lois Bischoff Smith, 96, of Fairfield, passed away on Thursday, May 29, 2025. She was born on August 15, 1928, during the presidency of Calvin Coolidge, to the late Nicholas and Jane (Tarrant) Bischoff. Lois led a long and vibrant life, filled with accomplishments, including her career in real estate which lasted nearly 70 years.

Lois attended St. Thomas School in Fairfield and graduated from Ludlowe High School, where she met her future husband, Herb Smith. As a child, she spent joyful summers enjoying the sun and sand at Pine Creek Beach alongside friends, including actress Elizabeth Taylor.

Lois began her real estate career at Herb's firm before moving on to Coldwell Banker. She was dedicated to moving her career forward and earned numerous certificates, including her broker licenses in both Connecticut and Virginia, as well as designations such as the GRI. Lois was deeply involved in the Fairfield community through organizations such as the Fairfield Women's Club, the Gaelic American Club, various zoning committees and the Sunhaven Beach Club (now Penfield). She formed lifelong friendships through her civic work and career and she remained socially active, sending out over 60 Christmas cards just this past December.

Known for her bold personality and trademark leopard print, Lois brought her energy and flair everywhere she went, from the office to Cape Cod's Chatham Bars Inn and the ski slopes of Sonnenberg in Vermont. She had a colorful sense of humor and a strong spirit. Her favorite phrase, "Keep on trucking", reflected her attitude of never giving up. She loved drinking Manhattans, had no tolerance for being underestimated and was proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with her male peers.

Lois was the devoted mother of three children, proudly putting her two sons through Fairfield Prep and her daughter through Lauralton Hall. Despite having children later in life, Lois was always active and enjoyed playing badminton, backyard softball, skiing (which she learned at 40) and enjoying nine holes of golf with Herb. She hosted countless Thanksgiving dinners, surrounded by extended family and laughter.

A major stroke and five days of struggle brought her earthly life to an end but she passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones who held her hand and played big band music in her final hours. True to her spirited nature, the room became filled with visitors (against the rules and she would have loved that). She will be remembered for her determination, laughter and zip, strong opinions, and her deep love for life. She leaves behind a legacy cherished by friends and family of all ages.

Lois is survived by her children, Darrin Smith and his wife, Nicole of Key West, FL, Kimberly A. Smith of Fairfield and Douglas Herbert Smith of Burlington, VT; and her two grandchildren, Kailyn and Lindsey. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her brothers, John and Richard Bischoff.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, June 26, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Fairfield. Interment will follow in St. Thomas Cemetery.

Lois was one of a kind...a vibrant and talented person, involved in the community and always willing to lend a hand. I benefitted from her and Herb's support when I was a political candidate. Lois certainly lived a full life. I admired her. May she rest in peace.
