Lugene Brewer Bowthorpe of Holladay, Utah passed away peacefully on August 16, 2023 among her family. She was 92 years old.
Lugene was born in Ogden, Utah on November 2, 1930 to Ellen and Herbert Brewer. She had four siblings, Ellen, Leland, Read, and Nanette. Much of her childhood was spent in Salt Lake City working and playing with family and friends. She especially loved traveling around the city tap-dancing with her sister Nanette, making up variety shows with her cousin Gayle to perform at family functions, riding horses bareback, and skiing at Alta with friends. One of her favorite places to go with her family was "Camp" –a small cabin up the south fork river in Ogden Canyon where the Brewers often gathered. She always looked up to her sisters and they remained close throughout their lives.
She attended Irving Jr. High and East High School, where her friends affectionately called her "Stilts," because of her intimidating height of 4 foot 11 inches! After Lugene graduated high school in 1948, she headed off to college. During her college years, Lugene spent the summers working and performing in Yellowstone National Park at Camp Roosevelt and Canyon Lodge where she fostered her love for the outdoors, and shared her signature "tongue-in-cheek" sense of humor.
While attending USU, she met Peirce Bowthorpe and was married in 1952. They moved to the Holladay area and had six children: Craig, Spence, Todd, LuAnn, Brent, and Mary (Ava). As a family, they loved water skiing at Bear Lake and Flaming Gorge, camping, fishing, and traveling. Many cherished memories have come from gathering for celebrations and spending time at their cabin near Kamas.
When Peirce passed away suddenly in 1978, Lugene carried on with strength and independence. She worked at Badger-Jensen Realty for many years, and later at the Utah State PTA office. Her organization, insight and quick wit have always been valued.
Lugene was known for her compassion and strong association with her many dear friends. She was an incredible cook and spent hours tending to her gorgeous garden. She stayed active with her walking circle and line dancing group, and loved reading with her book club. She enjoyed volunteering with the Utah Symphony and at the LDS Church Office Building. She had a strong testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Lugene served diligently in many church callings, including Primary, Relief Society, Young Women, and (of course) writing numerous Road Shows.
Lugene is survived by four of her children– Spence (Alyson), Todd (Annette), Brent (Daphne), and Ava. She was an adventurous Nana to twenty-one grandchildren and thirty-eight great grandchildren. We all benefited from her love for family traditions, interest in our accomplishments, silly songs and jokes, and large family dinners. She had a gift for gathering people and making them feel important and special. We love her, and she will be missed dearly.
A family visitation will be held from 6-7 pm on Thursday, August 24th at the Memorial Holladay Cottonwood Mortuary on 4670 Highland Drive. On Friday, August 25th, there will be a memorial service and celebration of life at 12:30 pm in the Latter-day Saint church building on 4917 Viewmont Street. Interment will be at the Memorial Holladay Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donating to the Yellowstone Forever Foundation in Lugene's honor. https://forever.yellowstone.org/give/176506/?_ga=2.86624986.376176714.1692586077-1045085626.1692586077#!/donation/checkout
