Maher Naji Sahawneh, 71, of Mobile, AL, a loving husband, father, grandfather, esteemed and loved physician in the Mobile community, passed into the arms of his Savior, Jesus Christ, on 24 April, 2024 in Mobile, AL.
Born on January 6, 1953, in Irbid, Jordan, Dr. Sahawneh was the second of six children born to Naji Sahawneh, a Jordanian military officer, and Kamleh Shorrosh Sahawneh. After a busy childhood in Jordan, Dr. Sahawneh, at the age of 15, emigrated to the United States with his older brother, Mazen, to attend Oneida Baptist Institute in Oneida, KY and graduated with his high school diploma in 1970. Dr. Sahawneh completed his undergraduate degree from the University of South Alabama and later earned a master's degree in pathology from the University of Alabama Birmingham before attending the University of South Alabama Medical School. After graduation from medical school in 1981, Dr. Sahawneh completed a residency in Internal Medicine. He later completed a fellowship in pulmonology at the University of South Alabama. During his 40-year career, Dr. Sahawneh practiced internal medicine, emergency medicine, and during the latter part of his career, focused on pulmonology and critical care.
Dr. Sahawneh was well known and highly respected in the Mobile medical community for his professional expertise, sound judgment, and most importantly for the empathy he was so skilled at conveying to patients and their families in time of need. Countless members of the community benefited greatly from his care and his presence at the Mobile Infirmary will be deeply missed by so many.
Dr. Sahawneh was also a devoted husband, father, sibling, and grandfather. Earlier in his life he enjoyed traveling with his family to the Smokies, spending time at his homes on the water fishing & relaxing, and spending time with his extended family in the Mobile area. An avid football fan, he was known to closely follow the Crimson Tide and regularly watched games with his brothers often with a great deal of animation. Later in life, he spent much of his spare time with his grandchildren enjoying and participating in their lives.
Dr. Sahawneh was predeceased by his Father Naji and Mother Kamleh and is survived by his wife of 48 years, Janet, daughters Katie Sahawneh of Mobile and Kristen Nava (Joaquin Nava) of Saraland, AL; grandchildren, Kayden Sahawneh, Joseph Pasquill, Charlotte Pasquill, Dominic Nava, and Ava Sahawneh.
