Margaret Luise Lamy (Lachowicz), 67, Captain in the United States Public Health Service for the United States Coast Guard (retired), went to the Lord peacefully surrounded by family on August 19, 2025, in Chesapeake, VA.

Captain Lamy was born in Philadelphia on August 5, 1958, to Peter and Angela Lamy, and grew up in Catonsville, Maryland. She graduated from Catonsville High School (1976), obtained her undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of Maryland (1980), and ultimately earned her Doctorate in Dental Science from the University of Maryland Dental School (1984).

She met her husband while serving in Governors Island, marrying Commander James R. Lachowicz, United States Coast Guard (retired) in September 1986. They raised two children together in Chesapeake-Paula and Anton-who both earned professional degrees.

Of significant accomplishment, Dr. Lamy was the first female Dental Officer to reach the rank of Captain in the United States Coast Guard.

Prior to reaching her historic rank of Captain, Margie served as a Dental Officer at Support Center New York on Governors Island (1985), Coast Guard Aviation Training Center in Mobile, Alabama (1988) and Coast Guard Support Center New Orleans (1990). She then served as Senior Dental Officer at Governors Island (1994) until its closure, when she transferred to Support Center Norfolk Virginia, then to Coast Guard Maintenance and Logistics Command Quality Assurance Branch – Dental Operations (2001), overseeing all Coast Guard dental clinics east of the Rocky Mountains. She served as Senior Medical and Dental Officer at Coast Guard Support Center Elizabeth City, North Carolina (2006) where she retired in 2011.

Margie traveled extensively with her family, from Hawaii to Rome and many other places in between. After retirement, Margie enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. A long-time member of Apostle's Lutheran Church in Chesapeake, VA, Margie supported Operation Christmas Child with her church's small group.

Throughout her life, Margie was the cornerstone of her family. She always put her children first and provided sage advice, solutions and support. Admirably, she did not let her 9-year fight with cancer diminish or slow her resolve to help others. She was a beacon of light and role model for all.

Margie is survived by her husband, James Lachowicz; daughter Paula Campbell (Colin) and two grandchildren, Clara and Luke; her son Anton Lachowicz (Wendy); and her brother Carl. She was preceded in death by her brother Rudolph and her grandson Atlas.

A memorial service will be held at Apostle's Lutheran Church, 370 Johnston Road, Chesapeake, Virginia 23322 on Saturday August 30 at 3 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Apostle's Lutheran Church in Margie's memory.
