Sgt Major Mario Cianchetta Obituary Sergeant Major Mario Cianchetta, USMC (Ret.), 69, of Union Beach, NJ passed away peacefully on November 27, 2024 at Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank.
Born on October 21, 1955, in Isernia, Italy, Mario immigrated to the United States as a young boy.
He attended and graduated from Keyport High School, having participated in a variety of high school sports including wrestling.
Mario proudly served his country and enlisted in the Marine Corps at the age of 17. He served both in active duty and in the reserves. He travelled the world during his time in the Corps including deployments to Okinawa, Japan and in Operation Desert Storm. Mario rose through the ranks and eventually retired as a Sergeant Major; he served in the Marine Corps for 28 years. Sergeant Major Cianchetta served in the infantry, with his military specialty being 03-41, mortars. His final command was as Sergeant Major of 6 th Communications Battalion in Brooklyn, NY. Mario was extremely proud to be a United States Marine.
Mario held many jobs over the course of his life, including at Wonder Bread, managing a junk yard in Englishtown and most recently and for the latter half of his life, was a general contractor/builder with his own company, Cianchetta Construction. Mario built many beautiful homes and buildings across New Jersey. Mario also enjoyed working on cars, especially classic cars; he was currently restoring a 1974 Plymouth Duster. He loved being a Nonno to his grandsons and enjoying the simple things in life.
Mario is survived by his two loving daughters, Margarita Cianchetta of Middletown, NJ and Stephanie Nasser and her husband Chris of Middletown, NJ, and his two loving grandsons, Matthew and Michael. He is also survived by his longtime partner, Kathleen Padavano, of Toms River.
Mario is predeceased by his parents, Michele and Yolanda Cianchetta Medoro as well as siblings, Antoinetta Burgarella, Rita Brynkiewciz and Anthony Medoro.
Mario is also survived by siblings Nicola Cianchetta and his wife Lina; Malfalda Tucci and husband Gerry; Antonio Cianchetta; Raffaela Medoro Santiago and her husband Jimmy; and a number of adoring nephews and nieces.
Sergeant Major Mario Cianchetta will be missed by all those that were lucky to know and serve alongside him. Described as a great Marine, he was an iconic leader who shaped generations of
Marines. He had the biggest heart, a tough exterior but was loyal and dependable, and was always there for his family and friends. Mario was truly larger than life.
Family and friends may visit and pay their respects on Thursday, 5 December from 2pm to 4pm and 7pm to 9pm at Day Funeral Home in Keyport, NJ. Visitation on Friday, 6 December 9AM to 9:30AM at Day Funeral Home in Keyport, NJ followed by a funeral mass 10AM at Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, 727 NJ-36 at TBA, Union Beach, NJ and interment at St. Joseph Cemetery, 360 Broadway, Keyport, NJ 07735.
