Obituary published on Legacy.com by Varcoe-Thomas Funeral Home - Doylestown on Jan. 23, 2025.
Mary Christine Hurley (Schmidt) died on December 13, 2024 in
Doylestown, PA. She was 77.
Mary is survived by her husband Kevin, children Beth, TJ, and Colin, and three grandchildren Ben, Evelyn, and Hanna. She was also a 2nd mother to Matt and Chris Hurley, Elliott, Katie, and Dan Guzmon.
Mary was born in Brooklyn NY on July 22, 1947 to Chester Schmidt and Kathryn Schmidt (Keene). The family moved out to Long Island soon after, where Mary grew up in Levittown and Locust Valley. She graduated from Our Lady of Mercy Academy in 1965 and went on to nursing school, then became a Registered Nurse at Miseracordia Hospital in NYC. She worked at several hospitals as an ICU, CCU, and ER nurse before settling in at North Shore Hospital in Manhasset, NY.
In June of 1972, Mary married Kevin Micheal Hurley. The couple had three children. In 1990 the family moved to
Doylestown, Pennsylvania where Mary returned to nursing once her youngest child was in high school. She ran a parish nurse program in Upper Bucks County for many years, helping countless solo seniors get the healthcare they needed while aging at home.
Mary loved to ski, she loved the beach, and she loved her family. She was a warm, generous, and open person, quick to laugh and make friends. She had an endless curiosity (and a seemingly endless knowledge) about medical and biological issues. She was a life long learner, always attending nursing conferences and lectures.
Mary was every one in her life's emergency call. Odd growth on your foot got you worried? Call Mary. Drug interaction giving you a weird rash? Call Mary. Think you might be having a heart attack? You guessed it, call Mary. She cared about other people more than she cared about herself. She gave her whole self and depth of knowledge to help both the people she loved and total strangers alike.
In addition to her husband, children, and grandchildren, Mary is survived by her brothers Rick, Jay, Tom, and Marty, her sister Nancy, and her dear sister Pat.
