Mary E. Jack, age 99, passed away peacefully at Trinity Manor Personal Care Home on June 20, 2024. She was born August 3, 1924, on the family farm in the Sharptop community. An avid learner, Mary started school at the age of six because her mother wouldn't let her start a year early. She was immediately promoted to the second grade because she could pass the first-grade test of being able to read and complete simple mathematical computations. After completing grammar school, Mary attended Pickens High School where upon graduation she began a short-lived teaching career. After completing one year in the education field, Mary moved to Atlanta in 1942 and found work at Davidson Paxton before taking a position in the auditing department of the Sears and Roebuck Co. While living in Atlanta, she met and married her husband, Leroy.
Together, Mary and Leroy owned and operated Jack's Floor Covering & Finishing in Canton for 40 years. In addition to keeping the books for the business, Mary also worked along side her husband installing carpet, vinyl, and hard wood floors. Even on the jobsite, Mary was never seen with a hair out of place or nails unpolished. She was the epitome of a southern lady even on a construction site.
Mary was a devoted wife, mother, and Mawmaw who loved her family deeply and found the greatest joy in spending time with them. Whether it was weekly dinner dates, October treks to Ellijay for apples, or larger Christmas gatherings, Mary was always eager to participate and frequently the orchestrator of the event. In addition to spending time with family members, Mary also enjoyed reading, needle work, traveling, and playing canasta. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Canton and an active member of her Sunday School class until the Covid pandemic.
Mary's legacy of hard work, strength, compassion, and faith leaves a lasting imprint on those she loved and who loved her. Her presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents, J. Frank and Buena Mitchell; husband, Leroy H. Jack, Sr.; brother and sister-in-law, Fred and Virginia Mitchell; and sister and brother-in-law, Donnie Jean and H. F. Wright. She is survived by her son, Leroy H. Jack, III (Bianca); granddaughter, Jennifer Wertz (Ben); granddaughter, Miriam Greene; grandson, John Jack (Tiffany); grandson, Jim Hill (Tami); great-grandsons, Nathan Jack (Laura) and Eli Greene; great-granddaughters, Nora Greene, Emma Jack and Arabella Wertz; step-great-grandson, Scott Wertz (Leah); step-great-granddaughter, Vikki Wertz; niece, Ann Wilkie as well as step-great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great-nephews and great-nieces.
