Mary Van Vleck

Mary Theresa Van Vleck (Murray), 62, of Pecatonica, passed away on November 2, 2024, after a long and courageous battle against brain cancer. Mary was born on December 4, 1961, in Rockford, IL. Mary attended St. Patrick's Catholic Grade School in Rockford before attending Auburn High School, graduating in 1979. She was an avid scrapbooker; loved ones could always count on a hand-made card for birthdays and Christmas. Mary also loved to read and travel, often venturing to the Northwoods of Wisconsin, a place she cherished deeply. Mary worked for many years at Bean's Inn in Pecatonica. She loved interacting with people and could talk to anybody. In 2009, Mary took a job at Pecatonica Middle School as the head cook, a position she held until her diagnosis in 2022. Her work was characterized by a remarkable dedication to service and a warm, welcoming presence that left a lasting impact on all who knew her.
Mary is survived by her husband of 34 years, Steve, and son, Austin (Emily) of Sioux Center, Iowa. Mother-in-law Marilyn Van Vleck. Sisters Kathleen Nussberger (Jim) of Ogema, Wisconsin; Michele Murray, Linda Bragg (Bobby), and Nancy Murray (Sandy) all of Rockford. Brother Michael Murray (Sue Cooling) of Rockford. Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Claude and Helen (Lasee) Murray, in-laws Shirley and Donald Van Vleck, brother Patrick Murray, and infant sister Patsy.
Mary's life was a testament to her loving spirit, generosity, and the deep bonds she forged with her family and community. Her memory will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing her. The family wishes to thank the staff at UW Health Carbone Cancer Center, Helen Dahl, Janis DeWall, Kellie Knutti, Laura Wiegert, Cindy Wiles, Megan Parker, Maddie Wilson, and Ellie Bolen.
A visitation will be held Saturday, November 9, 2024 from 9: 00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at McCorkle Funeral Home-Pecatonica Chapel 203 W. Fifth Street, Pecatonica, IL. Memorial service to follow at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Eric Mock officiating. Cremation Rites to be Accorded. Final Resting place to be Pecatonica Cemetery, Pecatonica, IL
All are welcome to join for lunch following the service at the American Legion of Pecatonica, 403 Main Street, catered by Bootie's, a favorite spot of Mary's over the last number of years.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the family.
