Mathew Scott Winter, age 51, passed away at IU Health Bloomington on Friday, October 3, 2025. He was born in Fitchburg, MA to Thomas Winter and Dianne Wood on May 14, 1974. Mathew was a firefighter paramedic, a profession he was immensely proud of. His work as firefighter paramedic led him to assist in helping others during 9/11. Through Mathew's valiant efforts, he helped rescue 113 people out of Tower 2, including a child he shielded for three days after both were trapped in the rubble. He also was an accomplished world traveler and had lived in every U.S. state except for Hawaii. Mathew met the love of his life, Candice Cooper, while she was working as his caregiver. A whirlwind romance blossomed and the two wed in January of 2025.
Mathew is survived by his beloved wife, Candice; his mother; and stepmother. He was preceded in death by his father. He will be dearly missed by all.
A celebration of Mathew's life will be held at Connected Church (3575 N Prow Rd, Bloomington, IN 47404) on November 1, 2025. The time of the service is to be determined. Allen Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
