Matthew C. McKinnon, age 84, passed away February 14, 2024 at Troy Beaumont Hospital. Matthew was the loving husband of Mary Ann McKinnon (nee Rebeta), father of Michael, Mark and Mary McKinnon, grandfather of Emily Beasley, William McKinnon and Rose McKinnon and great-grandfather of Victoria Beasley, Constance Beasley, Felix Beasley, Roderick Beasley, Elanor Beasley, Kirwyn McKinnon and Moira McKinnon.
Matthew was born in Hamtramck on January 29, 1940, son of Matthew McKinnon and Lillian McKinnon (Kiluk). Professor McKinnon received his B.S. degree in 1961 from the University of Detroit with a major in Physics. He worked for General Motors doing early research on semi-conductors. He held 12 patents from his time at GM.
He received his J.D. in 1972 from Detroit College of Law at Michigan State University. Following a clerkship with The Honorable Fred Kaess of the United States District Court, Professor McKinnon was an associate in the Detroit firm of Berry, Moorman, King, Lott and Cook. He joined the DCL/MSU faculty in 1974 and taught contracts, remedies, antitrust law, sports law, contract drafting and unfair trade practices until his retirement. Professor McKinnon's articles have appeared in the law reviews of Duquesne University, Emory University and the Detroit College of Law at Michigan State University. He also has written two casebooks entitled Sports Law and Contracts. He has written for The New York Times, The Detroit News and the Michigan Bar Journal. He was Professor Emeritus at MSU beginning in 2002.
Professor McKinnon joined the Knights of Columbus in 1967. He was past Financial Secretary and past Trustee of Council 7018 at St. Clement Catholic Church. He loved to travel and work outside on his 12 acre property until the time of his passing. He also loved riding his tandem bicycle with his wife. He was fond of reading and computer gaming with his wife, children and grand-children.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 15, 2024 from 2:00PM to 8:00PM, with a 7:00PM rosary, at the Henry M. Malburg Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 16, 2024 at 10:30AM at St Clement Catholic Church (343 S. Main Street Romeo, MI 48065).
