Melissa Rhodes, 64, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully on August 31, 2025, surrounded by her family.
Born in Waynetown, Indiana, on October 16, 1960, Melissa was the beloved daughter of Howard Dale “Papa” Martin and Patty “Nanny” Martin. She graduated from North Montgomery High School Class of ‘78 in Crawfordsville and went on to attend DePauw University as the class of ‘82 in Greencastle. She finished up at Indiana State University with a Master’s in Special Education, class of ‘84.
Melissa dedicated her life to caring for others – through her family, her work, and her community. She began her career teaching at Pike High School in Indianapolis, took time away from the classroom to raise her children, and later returned to education through Project Search with Carmel and Westfield schools. She retired this past May, celebrating more than 23 years of shaping the lives of her students.
Melissa’s joy came from serving others. She was deeply involved in the Christamore House Guild, where she served as a past president from 2007-2008 and helped lead initiatives such as Christmas at Christamore, making a lasting impact on countless families. She also loved creating beauty with her hands, whether through sewing, home improvement projects, or adding her personal touch to everyday things.
A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, Melissa is survived by her husband Patrick Rhodes; her children Allison (Justin), Jacob (Elisabeth), Christian (Hannah), and Isaac; her cherished grandson Ford, the light of her life; her brother Mick Martin, and his children.
Melissa lived life with heart – whether cheering at track meets, softball games, and CYO events, or gathering loved ones at the family’s lake house, where she found peace taking the kids out on the boat and cooking for the people that she loved. She will be remembered for her boundless generosity, her creativity, and her love of family.
A visitation and service will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday, September 5th, at Flanner Buchanan – Zionsville.
Melissa leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and joy. Her presence will be deeply missed and her memory forever treasured.
