Meretta Dorothy (LaPan) Sylvester

It is with the deepest sorrow that we mourn the passing of Mrs. Meretta Sylvester, aged 95, of Kawkawlin, MI. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and aunt. Meretta passed away peacefully while living in California with her daughter on Sunday, May 18, 2025. She returned to her heavenly home to spend eternity with our Lord and Savior. She was born July 28, 1929, in Essexville MI, to the late Frank and Meretta LaPan. She married Robert V Sylvester on August 21, 1948, at Sacred Heart Church in Kawkawlin MI.
She is survived by five children, Robert E (Lynda) Sylvester, Barbara L Prieur (Dave), Diane M Goodman, Sandra L (Louie) Torres, and Amy L (Craig) Bourcier; thirteen grandchildren Marcelle (Michael) Norgan, Andrea (Troy) Schafer, Nicole Sylvester, Jennifer Rhodes, Forrest Sylvester, Heather (Tommy) Fricke, Amber Rae Prieur, Jason (Sunni) Goodman, Melissa (Matthew) Froelich, Lisa Sysak (Joseph), Matthew Sysak, Jessica (Joshua) McPhee, and Michael (Kayla) Bourcier; twenty-three great grandchildren Megan Norgan (Miles), Marlaina (Daniel) Day, Matthew (Janey) Schafer, Michael Schafer (Tacia), Brieannah Sylvester (Dominique), Brittanni MacMillon (Cory), Ayroneice Boyd, Ahnjaylah Frazier, DeVonte' Rhodes, Jazlyn Rhodes, Karlee Fricke, Kenlee Fricke, Desiree Prieur, Ruxin Goodman, Remy Goodman, Luke Froelich, Adeline Froelich, Mia Muratori, Leela McPhee, Noella McPhee, Malachi McPhee, Emery Bourcier, and Ari Bourcier; ten great-great-grandchildren Gavin Schafer; Ryder Schafer, Jadyn Gregory, Brielle Gregory, Bryson Gregory, Jayda Gregory, Aurora Sylvester, Emery Jo Rhodes, Murphy Day, and Baby Day; Sisters-in-law Nancy (Thomas) Hoerauf, Betty (Gerald) Sylvester, and Kathleen (Kay) (Ray) Linda; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Robert Virgil Sylvester; son Daniel James Sylvester; grandson Craig Robert Bourcier; parents Frank and Meretta LaPan, mother and father-in-law Emery and Angeline (Stosik) Sylvester; brothers and sisters Frank (Alice) LaPan, Edward (Henrietta) LaPan, Gertrude (Ernest) Grandmaison, Alvin (Rita) LaPan, Albina (Stanley) Wenglikowski, Virginia (Harlan) Ebright, Virginia (Jack) Nuzzo, Evelyn (Sam) Spencer, Fredrick (Betty) LaPan; brothers and sisters in-laws Leonard Sylvester, William Sylvester, Patricia Sylvester, Emery Jr (Donna) Sylvester, Donald (Iva) Sylvester, Richard (Joe)(Violet) Sylvester, Gerald (Betty) Sylvester, Shirley (James) Charbonneau, Kathleen (Ray) Linda.
Meretta was a kind and gentle soul who loved cooking, crocheting, puzzles and Scrabble. Big Sunday family dinners were her favorite. There always seemed to be just enough slippery dumplings to go around. She was a long-time member of St Maria Goretti Parish, now St Catherine of Sienna Parish.
The Sylvester Family would like to thank Folsom Mercy Hospital, Pinnacle Homecare and Assisted Living, and Folsom Mercy Hospice in California for the excellent care she received, particularly from her nurses Steve and Hannah.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2025. The family viewing 9:00 am to 9:30 am, public viewing 9:30 am to 11:00 am, funeral mass 11:00 am at St Catherine of Siena Parish, 2956 E North Union Road, at the corner of Two Mile Road, in Bay City. Meretta will be interred at Calvary Cemetery immediately following.
