Mickey Gene Mills, 68, of Lapel, passed away on Monday, May 12, 2025, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on October 29, 1956, in Noblesville, Indiana to Joe Richard and Idabelle (Renbarger) Mills. He was a 1975 graduate of Lapel High School. He went on to earn his bachelor's degree in elementary education in 1988 from Ball State University. Mickey worked for Brockway Glass in Lapel until he earned his bachelor's degree, then taking a job with Anderson Community Schools. He taught at several different schools over a 23-year career, spending the last of those years at Erskine Elementary.
In his younger years, Mickey enjoyed coaching little league baseball and basketball. He loved fishing, sports and used to do some hunting. He also enjoyed camping in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan with his family.
Family was so very important to him. He loved spending time with his family and friends, and he did not know a stranger. Mickey and his wife spent many hours restoring antique steamer trunks, a hobby that turned into a passion for the joy on a happy customer's face.
Mickey is survived by his wife, Brenda Kay (Horein) Mills; four children, Kathleen (Richard Hawk) Mills, Matthew (Brandee Gordon) Mills, Jayson (Rebecca Penn) Mills and Darrick (Konnor Kleinbub) Mills; four grandchildren, Micailynne, Jordan, Jaymorie and Jaxon; his mother, Idabelle Mills; two brothers, Jerry (wife, Jan) Mills, Jimmy (wife, Dee) Mills; a sister, Michelle (husband, Doug) Banning; and several nieces and nephews.
