Mike Bates Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Freeman Mortuary - Jefferson City on Dec. 18, 2025.
Michael "Mike" Dennis Bates, 48, of Saint Charles, MO, left us unexpectedly on December 12, 2025.
He was born on August 4, 1977, in Woodstock, Illinois, one of four children born to Dennis and Sharon (King) Bates. He was a proud 1997 graduate of Jefferson City High School and continued his education at the University of Missouri where he earned his bachelor's degree in 2002. Mike later received his master's degree from Webster University in 2014.
As a young boy, Mike was captivated by Indiana Jones, sparking a lifelong passion for geology, leading to a distinguished 20-year career as a Professional Geologist in St. Louis. He was a certified geologist in four states. Known for his dedication and knowledge, Mike made a lasting impact on everyone he met along his career journey. Mike was always so eager to share his passion with others.
Mike was a true explorer at heart, and he found tranquility in the great outdoors- whether it was casting a line while fishing, conquering hiking trails, or snorkeling in crystal-clear waters. His curiosity took him on adventures across Europe, South Korea, and the Hawaiian Islands where he was always eager to soak in new cultures, cuisines, and gather treasures like rocks and shells.
His interests were as diverse as they were deep. A history buff who inherited his father's love for the past, Mike enjoyed nothing more than delving into historical movies and science fiction. He was a craftsman at heart from restoring vintage military vehicles, painting model figurines, to refurbishing antique furniture. These are a few of his hobbies that he performed with patience and precision. Cooking was one of the ways he showed his love, pouring his heart into every meal he made. He was well known for his grilling skills and being the master chef during camping trips.
In his leisure, Mike reveled in strategy games like Warhammer 40K and Magic: The Gathering. Mike valued the camaraderie and strategy they offered while being with friends. His outlook on life was simple yet profound, which is a testament to his grounded nature and steady approach to life.
Mike's legacy is one of patience, purpose, and a constant quest for knowledge. His spirit lives on, inspiring those who knew him to approach life with same curiosity and passion that Mike demonstrated. He was deeply loved by all who knew him, and will be remembered fondly for his warm smile, and his helpful nature in all the ways he cared for others. He will be greatly missed but will never be forgotten.
He is survived by his adoring parents, Dennis and Sharon Bates; siblings, Matthew Bates (Lynn) of Olathe, KS, Sarah Bates-Terp (Kevin) of Denver, CO, and Rachel Bates of Jefferson City, MO; niece, Emma Bates; nephews, Ethan Bates and Keegan Terp; and a host of extended family members and close friends.
Memorial contributions are suggested to a charity of the donor's choice.
Mike's family will be hosting a celebration of life service at a later date.
Funeral arrangements are under the care of Freeman Mortuary.

So sorry for your loss. Mike and I worked closely together for years, which I will forever cherish. He was such a curious guy, with a strong passion to be the best in his field. He took tremendous pride in his work, and was a great guy to discuss technically difficult issues with. I will miss Mike greatly, and am so so sorry for your loss. Rest in peace Mike.
