Gouverneur - Nancy J. Cappellino, age 89, passed away on May 10, 2025 at home under the loving care of her family and St. Lawrence Valley Hospice.
Calling hours will be at French Funeral Home in Gouverneur on Sunday May 18, 2025 from 4:00-7:00 pm. Her funeral Mass will be held at St. James Catholic Church on Monday May 19, 2025 at 10:00am with Father James Seymour officiating. Burial will follow at the New St. James Cemetery.
Nancy was born on September 28, 1935 in the town of Fowler. Parents were the late John Hall and Ann (Thompson) Hall. Nancy graduated from Gouverneur High School in 1953 and SUNY Canton in 1994.
Nancy married Carl Cappellino December 26, 1953 at St James Church.
Nancy was a PE teacher at St. James School 1967-1977.
Nancy and Carl were the owner/operators of O.N.C.E Bowling Lanes 1977-1987.
She worked on the St. Lawrence County Board of Elections.
As a volunteer she was active with the St. James Church community, which spanned her entire life. Mrs. Cappellino was a member of the Gouverneur School Board, St. Lawrence/Lewis BOCES, was president and vice president for both boards. She served on the Gouverneur Correctional Facility advisory board.
Other activities and awards include VFW 2000 Citizen of the Year, Chamber of Commerce Award of Merit, Friends of Education Award from SUNY Canton. Life member of the EJ Noble Hospital Auxiliary. She was a member of the Arts Club, Cosmopolitan Dance Club and blood donor 38-gallon club.
Throughout her life, she was always quick to assist family, neighbors and friends. Her hot fudge sauce was loved by many. She was the first to applaud accomplishments or comfort anyone in need.
She was predeceased by her husband Carl P. Cappellino Nov. 26, 1994. She became a Gold Star Mother when their son Paul J. Cappellino (a Navy pilot) was lost at sea July 16, 1980.
Nancy is survived by her children Michael and Vicky Cappellino, Carla Frank, Teresa Cappellino and Adam Steigerwald, Peter and Ellen Cappellino.
Her husband of 24 years Daniel Caruso and his children Heather Hufford, Nicole Pfeifer, Sean Caruso and his granddaughter Danielle Derrigo.
Her grandchildren Stacey Hance, James Frank, Paul Cappellino, Ashley Frank, Carl Cappellino, Amelia Cappellino and 8 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, Nancy has asked that donations be made to St. James Church, Gouverneur Hospital Auxiliary, or Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley. Condolences may be shared online at www.frenchfuneralhomes.com
