Nancy D. Miller, a cherished resident of Hamilton, New Jersey, passed from this life on April 9, 2025, at the age of 83, surrounded by her loving family at the Serenity Hospice Unit of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. Born on March 10, 1942, in Trenton, Nancy lived a life deeply rooted in her community, ever dedicated to family, faith, and service.
A proud alumna of Steinert High School, Nancy began a commendable career serving the state of New Jersey. Starting with the Racing Commission, she found her true calling as a Human Resource Manager in the Office of the Attorney General, Department of Law and Public Safety, where she dedicated 35 years of her life to supporting public service. Her work was marked by unwavering commitment and compassion for her colleagues.
Nancy's spiritual journey was intertwined with her lifelong membership in Holy Apostles Episcopal Church in Yardville. She was a very active and devout member of the congregation; she faithfully attended Sunday and Wednesday Mass each week and never missed a Holy Day. For many years, she sang in the choir, at times with her grandmother, mother, and daughter. She was a member of the vestry and Episcopal Church Women (ECW). Nancy was a long-time member of the Altar Guild, starting to serve when her children were still in diapers. For many years she served as Deputy for the Diocesan Convention and the Trenton Convocation. Nancy was active in the Episcopal Diocese of New Jersey, serving as the last Directress of the Diocesan Altar Guild and, thus, on the Diocesan Liturgy Commission.
For a long time, she was known as the "food lady" or "kitchen lady", and ran the kitchen for many church dinners, bazaars, and boutiques. Her potato sausage soup was a constant favorite, and members of the parish often reserved quarts for purchase. Her generosity and warmth touched the hearts of many within the congregation. She approached life with joy, finding delight in going to the beach, cooking, casino outings, oldies concerts, dancing, and traveling-moments that exemplified her vibrant spirit and zest for life.
Nancy is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Kasu F. Miller Jr., and her son, Kenneth R. Miller, as well as her parents, Wilson Commerford and Bettye Temple Austin ; she is survived by her loving daughter, Jane E. Hafer, and son-in-law, Ernest G. Hafer, Sr., who will carry forward her legacy of love and kindness; her sister, Elizabeth B. Austin, along with her grandchildren, Ernest G. Hafer, Jr. and his wife, Tracy, Lindsay Harner, Melyni Woodbury, Dorie Montferrate and her husband, Daniel, as well as her three great-grandchildren, Cael and Noelle Harner and Kieran Woodbury. Nancy's spirit will also be celebrated by her many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and a vast network of family and friends who were touched by her light.
Memorial Gathering will be held on Saturday, May 3, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at Holy Apostles Episcopal Church, 1040 Yardville Allentown Rd, Trenton, NJ 08620. Burial Office and Requiem Eucharist will be celebrated at 12:00 p.m., celebrated by Rev. Michael T. Panzarella.
