O. Wells Foster (91) of Jennersville, Pennsylvania passed away on February 12, 2023.
Wells was born to Mary Jeannette (Johnnie) and David Smith Foster in Delaware in 1931. He grew up with, and was pre-deceased by, his beloved siblings: David Smith Foster, Mary Carey (Mimi) Haskell, and Lucia Vennum Adams. Wells attended Walnut Green School, St. Andrews School, and the University of Delaware ('57) where he especially loved his art classes.
Wells was proud of his service as a Second Lieutenant in the Marines stationed in Panama in 1952-54. In addition to his military service, he supported his community as a trustee at Sanford School and at The Pilot School and by serving on the Delaware Academy of Medicine and the World Affairs Council.
Wells co-owned Brandywine Oil Company with Harvey Stuart, before joining Patterson-Schwartz Real Estate Company, and then went into development. He fondly remembered driving his oil truck all over Delaware and stopping in for breakfast around the state at places like the old "Post House."
Wells loved animals and his house was always filled with many pets including gerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs, crows, cats, dogs, and raccoons; and when he had the farm, ducks, chickens, pigs, and horses. Even close to the very end of his life, his pets were his constant companions.
Wells was known for his love of nature and was delighted each spring when the daffodils would reappear. Throughout his life, Wells, a self-taught craftsman, built intricate model ships and continuously modified (and improved) his daily amenities. In his retirement, Wells tended to his beautiful garden-named "Shortwood Gardens" as a playful nod to Longwood Gardens-and continued to work with his hands.
Wells was preceded in death by his beloved wives Isabelle S. Foster and Carolyn E. Foster. He is survived by his seven children: Alexis, Lucia, Elliot, Ann, Evie, Will, and Kristin. He is also survived by his thirteen grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Wells will be remembered for his friendliness, sense of humor, and his creativity. He frequently expressed his gratitude for his long and full life. He will be greatly missed.
Services and internment will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, the family asks those who are able to donate to Save the Children https://support.savethechildren.org/site/Donation2?df_id=6666&6666.donation=form1&mfc_pref=T
