Paul Richard Flatley (1941-2025)
On March 15, 2025, Paul Richard Flatley scored his "last touchdown" surrounded by daughters and grandchildren. With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved Paul Richard Flatley, age 84, of Richmond, Indiana. Born on January 30, 1941 in Richmond, Indiana, Paul was a man whose life was defined by love, sport, friendship and dedication to his community. He was a cherished father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose stories, teasing and generosity were legendary.
Paul grew up in Richmond, Indiana, a small town where he developed a love for sports, hard work and life on the farm. His hometown shaped him into a compassionate and hardworking man. He carried the values of his childhood with him throughout his life - values of achievement, service, and the importance of community. He always said, "Back Home in Indiana" and enjoyed breakfast at Tin Lizzy and Big Boy most mornings, catching up with friends and sharing stories. His loyalty to his hometown was evident in the way he supported local businesses, attended community events, and lent a helping hand wherever it was needed. Paul was always there for the people of Richmond.
After playing football at Northwestern University, Paul's athletic talent led him to the National Football League (NFL). He played for the Minnesota Vikings (1963-1967) and the Atlanta Falcons (1968-1970). As a wide receiver, Paul made a name for himself as an exceptional player, he was named NFL Rookie of the Year in 1963 and earned a Pro Bowl selection in 1966. His remarkable career was honored by his induction into the Indiana Hall of Fame and the Chicagoland Hall of Fame, a testament to his skill, perseverance, and contributions to football. One of his frequent stories and quotes was said by his favorite coach, Norm Van Brocklin, "you've got two things going for you, shit and nothing."
In addition to his family, Paul was deeply involved in sports broadcasting. He became a beloved voice to many as a color commentator for the Minnesota Vikings and the Minnesota Gophers on WCCO Radio, working alongside the legendary Ray Christensen. His insight, humor, and no nonsenses approach made him a fan favorite, and his voice brought joy to countless listeners.
Paul found fulfillment in business, founding Flatley Staffing and Technical in Minneapolis, MN, CO, FL and KC. Paul leveraged his relationships, "get shit down" approach and "make it happen" attitude to a highly successful business.
Paul's family was always his greatest priority. He was an incredible father to his three daughters - Allison Flatley (Gary), Brooke Flatley (Jon), and Leslie Reuter (Noel) and a doting grandfather to his grandchildren, Mia, Reis, Ellie, Taylor, Ava, Gracie, Sydney, and Jack Paul, who brought him so much joy. His love for his family was boundless, and he made every moment count, whether it was spending time on the farm, telling stories, honky-tonking or simply being together. He always said, "what are we doing tomorrow."
Throughout his life, Paul shared a special bond with his best friend, Chuck Wellings, whom he met in primary school. Their friendship endured for decades, with Chuck being a constant source of support and companionship. Their deep connection was a testament to the lasting power of true friendship.
Paul was a world traveler who kept detailed logbooks of each trip. Paul loved his trips with his brother, Carl and sister, Ellen. Their annual sibling trip was something he looked forward to all year. The trips were filled with laughter and adventure, The siblings supported each other's families and enjoyed their nieces and nephews. Motorcycling and fishing were among their favorite adventures.
Paul was preceded in death by his sister Ellen Kay Flatley, his mother Bernadine Reis Flatley, and his father. He is survived by his brother Carl Flatley, his three daughters, Allison, Brooke, and Leslie, his grandchildren, Mia, Reis, Ellie, Taylor, Ava, Gracie, Sydney, and Jack Paul, as well as many extended family members, friends, and community members who were blessed to know him.
A service at St. Andrews Catholic Church and celebration of life in Richmond, Indiana will be announced soon. Paul will be buried next to his mother and grandparents in Earlham Cemetery in Richmond, IN.
