Peter C. Gibson- loving dad, grandad, brother, uncle, and partner- age 85, a longtime resident of Chelmsford and most recently of Sunny Acres Nursing Home, passed away peacefully on October 20, 2025.
Peter was born on February 1, 1940, to the late Lester and Dorothy (Hart) Gibson. He was a graduate of Lowell High School. During his high school years, Peter loved playing various sports and was highly involved in the church softball leagues of Lowell and Chelmsford, the Lowell YMCA basketball league, and the bowling league of Calvary Baptist church. He was also a member of the youth groups of Pawtucket Congregational and Calvary Baptist churches of Lowell. Peter belonged to St John's Episcopal Church and later was a member of Calvary Baptist Church- serving as a deacon, collector, house committee member, and volunteer at monthly bean suppers and annual church fairs.
Peter had a lifelong fondness for Lowell and its' history. He started his work career at The Middlesex County Bank and the Lowell Shoe Company. He then attended Northern Essex Community College, Plymouth State College, and Suffolk University, where he received a master's degree in Business Administration.
During his summer breaks from school, he and his long-time buddy, Dale, travelled across the country on road trips highlighting major league baseball stadiums. His favorite stadiums were in Florida and Michigan.
Peter had an extensive career in education, having been an instructor of accounting and business management. He taught full-time at Becker College, 25 years as an adjunct instructor at the University of Massachusetts- Lowell, and upon retirement at Mass Bay Community College.
He enjoyed local traveling and found peace in northern New England. He also loved reading about History of all kinds- especially sports, WWII, and the Titanic; collecting Department 56 Villages; listening to the Statler Brothers; eating at The Glenview and The Old Mill; solving crossword puzzles; snuggling with cats; and watching movies (he would sometimes spend a hot summer day mischievously theater hopping). Peter was an avid Boston sports fan; he often played golf and faithfully watched the Celtics and Patriots games. When he was young, he even attended local try-outs for the Boston Red Sox. He also took great pride in his appearance and was always dressed sharp.
He is survived by three children: John Gibson and his wife Vilma, Laurie Owens and her husband Joel, and Lisa Gibson and her longtime partner Brian Bergeron; two grandchildren, Johnny Gibson and Ryan Owens; his longtime companion of 33 years, Janet Paton; a sister, Meredith Goodwin and her late husband Ralph; two nieces, Melissa Traynor and Jennifer Rand; and a grandcat, Jack, who he loved to cat-sit.
