Randall Dey Smith was a man of many hats. But underneath them all, he was the same man. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, physician. He was there for anyone who needed help, a pillar of strength and support. He always saw the best in everyone, even when they couldn't see it in themselves.
Randall was born and raised in St. Louis by his beloved parents, Robert and Jean Smith. He went to school at the University of Missouri-Columbia, where he met the love of his life Rebecca. His first degree was in anthropology, but after being drafted and serving as a medic in Vietnam, he came back to pursue a life in medicine. He practiced physical medicine at the VA for his entire career, helping veterans live better lives, and even after retiring, he continued to help people. He helped with his medical knowledge, his caring, his undying positivity, his great advice, and of course his sense of humor. He traveled the country with his one and only, finding a love for the southwest, and loved spending time at his country cabin. He discovered his inner cowboy, training and riding horses. In addition to his love of golf, guitar, his motorcycles, and woodworking, he added regular poker games and fiddling. He enjoyed retirement to the fullest; he lived the life he wanted to live.
Randall is survived by his wife Rebecca Smith; his children Rachel Smith (Jeremy Cox), Yitschok Smith (Suri Smith), Naomi Kloeppersmith (Benjamin Kloeppersmith), and Leah Franks (Chad Franks); his brothers Steve Smith, Jim Smith, and Bill Smith (Elizabeth Massey-Smith); fifteen grandchildren; his dog Bella, and his horses Penny and Sweetie. Randy was an extraordinary man who will be loved and missed by everyone who knew him.
Graveside Service will be held at 3:00 pm, Sunday, May 19, 2024 at Columbia Cemetery. An open house reception at the Smith's house will follow the service.
Arrangements are under the direction of Parker-Millard Funeral Service & Crematory, 12 East Ash Street, Columbia, MO 65203 (573) 449-4153. Condolences may be left online for the family at www.parkermillard.com.

Met Randall when we were freshmen at Mizzou. Not surprised to read good words about his life. Some, like him, make a lasting impression of superior character and leadership traits.

I remember working with Dr Smith when he was a resident at Rusk. I have crossed paths with him throughout the years. He was always caring, compassionate, knowledgeable and down to earth. I was so sorry to hear of his passing. Sending love, hugs and warmth to his family and friends.
