Richard Clayton MacWhinnie Sr, age 92, of Ipswich, passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 22nd, at the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford. Born and raised in Lynn, he was the son of the late Hazel (Warren) and Hayward MacWhinnie and brother to the late Jean Hamilton. He was a devoted husband of Helen (Smith) MacWhinnie with whom he shared 72 years of loving marriage.
After graduating from Lynn English high school he enlisted in the United States Air Force and proudly served his country. He started his career at Shetland Products in Salem, Ma and continued on at Sylvania in the Equipment Development Operations.a
He was a man of faith and an active member of the Masons. In retirement he volunteered for the Topsfield Council on Aging. Once his wife retired they enjoyed traveling together as a couple and with friends. Richard was an avid history buff, enjoyed woodworking and a lover of ice cream.
Richard is survived by his wife, Helen MacWhinnie; two sons, Richard MacWhinnie Jr. and his wife Kathy, Brian MacWhinnie and his wife Joanna; two daughters, Andrea Mercier-Green and her husband Jim, Diane Willard and her husband Nick; 10 grandchildren, Eric MacWhinnie, Sarah MacWhinnie, Amy Potter; Nichole Armano; Heather Mercier, Kristin Cisneros, Michael Mercier, Nathan Mercier; Paige Willard and Rachel Willard. In addition he had 16 great grandchildren all of whom he knew and loved.
Richard's funeral services will be at Campbell Funeral Home, 6 High St., Ipswich, on Friday, May 2, at 12:00pm. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours prior to - service from 10:00am to 12:00pm. Burial will be at Cowles Cemetery in Ipswich. Contributions may be made in Richard's memory to Beth Israel Lahey Health at Home, Hospice Care at www.bilhathome.org Information, directions, condolences at www.campbellfuneral.com.
