Robert (Bob) W. Moroney, age 76, of Peabody, MA (formerly of Wenham, MA) passed away peacefully on October 3, 2023, following a battle with multiple health conditions, including septic shock and heart failure.
Robert was born in Salem, MA on February 23, 1947, to Timothy and Ann (Callahan) Moroney, who raised him to value corned beef and cabbage on St. Patrick's Day, spirited music and travel. Robert graduated from Salem High School and studied civil engineering at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where he also enjoyed playing soccer for the Minutemen.
Following graduation from UMass and completion of its ROTC program, Robert enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving at Custer Air Force Station in Battle Creek, MI, and Wright-Patterson AFB near Dayton, OH. After retiring from active service, Robert remained in the Air Force Reserve for another 17 years and proudly attained the rank of lieutenant colonel, a notable distinction for a civil engineer in the Air Force. After living in Ohio with his young family, Robert moved back to Massachusetts where he worked for Cullinan Engineering in Auburn and for various consultants. He may be best remembered for the more than 30 years he spent as the Director of Public Works for Manchester-by-the-Sea, battling the elements and working at all hours to help keep the roads safe during brutal New England winters. Even the Blizzard of '78 was not enough to stop Bob Moroney! In retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his wife Barbara (Juhne) Moroney to the Caribbean, pampering numerous Miniature Schnauzers and one Yorkie, drumming his fingers to the Blues Brothers and the sounds of Motown, nurturing his sweet tooth, and sharing his views on the world with his grandchildren and others.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents and wife of 51 years, Barbara (Juhne) Moroney. He is survived by his daughters, Erin Moroney of London, England, and Kellie (Moroney) Chavero of Framingham, MA; two grandchildren, Austin and Julianna Chavero; and a son-in-law, Alan Chavero.
Visitation and a brief service will be held at Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal Street, Salem, MA on Monday, October 9 from 1p.m. to 3p.m. A private interment will happen at Puritan Lawn Memorial Park and Cemetery in Peabody at a later date. Donations to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation would be greatly appreciated. For more information, please call the Murphy Funeral Home at 978-744-0497 or visit www.MurphyFuneralHome.com.

As a teenager, I worked for Bob at Singing Beach. As an adult I worked with Bob for nearly 20 years at the Manchester Town Hall. Bob was a dedicated public employee and a very supportive coworker to all employees at Town Hall.
During snowstorms, he would hold command from his DPW office, often sustained by the Cup of Noodles that he kept at the ready in his desk drawer
not going home to Wenham until the streets were cleared. Second floor lunch breaks were filled with discussions about Barbara and his family, recent cruise or Florida vacation, Jimmy Buffett concert or event, home improvement projects, and his beloved dogs. After becoming a grandfather, Bob would proudly share updated photos of his grandchildren Austin and Julianna. We missed him when he retired from the Town. Rest in peace Bob and sympathies to Erin, Kellie and family.
