Robert Wynes Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Snow Funeral Home - Saginaw on Jan. 5, 2025.
Robert Joseph Wynes, age 77, of Saginaw, MI, passed away on January 3, 2025, following a brief battle with returned renal cell cancer.
Bob was born in Saginaw, MI, on March 25, 1947. He attended St. Mary's Cathedral High School from kindergarten through twelfth grade, graduating in 1965. He attended Central Michigan University for his Bachelor of Science Degree, (Sociology and History), and graduated in 1970. He completed his Master of Arts Degree at CMU in Guidance and Counseling in 1973.
Bob taught Head Start in Saginaw for three years, followed by several years as a rehab counselor with the Saginaw Health Department. He then took the position of Supervisor of Bay County Children's Protective Service for 9 years. The remainder of his career was spent as a Licensing Consultant for the State of Michigan, working with children's daycares.
Bob founded the Bay County Abuse and Neglect Prevention Council in 1983. He served on the board of the Saginaw Valley 4-C Council, was a member of the Delta College Early Childhood Education Advisory Committee, and the Bay County Childcare Task Force. He was a past president and founding member of the Bay County Children's Protective Service and Senior Citizen Centers.
Bob retired in 2002, but continued to work as an Adjunct Professor in Sociology at SVSU. He bought and rehabbed homes in the Saginaw area, putting to use the many skills he had as a man who could build or fix almost anything. He also worked as a volunteer counselor at Cathedral Mental Health where he continued to touch the lives of others.
Bob married Becky Scheerhorn in 1988. He made it very clear that he came as a packaged deal with two cats. His kitties were a very special part of his life, and he loved sitting with them on his lap or being entertained by their antics. Bob and Becky renovated a log cottage in East Tawas together which was a haven for both for over 30 years. They enjoyed many travels in the U.S. and abroad and attended musical events and plays at Midland Center for the Arts with dear friends. Bob developed friendships in his neighborhood and often used his Ranger to plow others out after a big snow.
In retirement, Bob became involved in the sport of competitive shooting. He was a past member and board member of the Freeland Conservation Club, and a current member of the Bay County Conservation and Gun Club. The highlight of his week was getting together with his buddies to shoot sporting clays. The camaraderie and laughter with these men was priceless.
Bob was also a lover of cars from the age of 16 to the present. He worked on them, raced them, and bought and sold them over the years. His "car friends" and their wives have been life-long, and gatherings always include many tales of youthful shenanigans.
Bob recently sold his beloved 1934 Ford 5-window coupe, and has always loved pointing out the numerous cars he had previously owned in his life.
Bob was a man of deep faith and friendships. He could talk with anyone on many topics, favorites being history and religion. He loved learning and growing, and was an avid reader. He enjoyed a good laugh, had a great sense of humor, had many one-liners, loved telling stories and often was the life of the party. A good statement to sum up Bob was that he was a friend to many and a servant to those in need.
Bob was predeceased by his parents, Robert B. Wynes and Mary L. (Corrigan) Wynes, his sister, Madelyn Wynes and his brother in-law, Dirk Scheerhorn.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Rebecca Scheerhorn; his siblings: Elizabeth Wynes, (Kent Gwinn); Mary (Jerry) Marsden; Anne (Marvin) Segraves; Kathleen (Doug) Olson; and John (Barbara) Wynes, along with his sister-in-law Victoria Scheerhorn (Vaughn Prior). Bob treasured his nieces and nephews: Tom Mahank, Emily Mahank, Laura Mahank (Doug Schuldt), Sabrina Gyorvary (Kanok Sa-ngimthong), Eleanor Segraves, Anne Olson, Ryan (Meiko) Olson, Morgan (Shaye) Wynes, Kacey (Matt) Diehl, Kelly (Nick) Carbary, along with his great nieces and nephews Olivia and Ava Schuldt, Theo Diehl and Ryan and Jack Carbary.
A Celebration of Life for Bob will be held in the Spring of 2025. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the charity of your choice in Bob's name.
