Roy Berbert Obituary

Roy Berbert Greenville - Roy Berbert, 97, passed peacefully from this life following a long battle with COPD. A memorial service will be held on Friday, at 11AM, in Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. The family will receive friends on Thursday, from 6-8PM at Wilkerson Funeral Home. Committal will be private. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jackie Benson Berbert, daughter Ruth Berbert Woods, parents Lyn and Emilie Berbert, siblings Lyn Berbert and Sylvia Rellstab. He is survived by his sons, David Paul Berbert (Amy) of Greenville, NC and Mark Adam Berbert (Becky) of Louisburg NC, granddaughter Emily Berbert Hall (Caleb) and great-grandson Carter Hall of Summerville SC. Born and raised in Mount Vernon New York, he matriculated at Iona University. After college, he was employed by Burroughs-Wellcome Pharmaceutical company. When BW relocated their manufacturing base of operations from Tuckahoe NY to Greenville, NC, he and his family followed and settled permanently in Brook Valley. Roy was employed by Burroughs-Wellcome for more than 40 years, retiring in 1987. Roy was an avid baseball fan, enjoying all aspects of the game. In Greenville, he coached Little League for Coca-Cola's sponsored team in the North State League for more than 25 years. He came out of coaching 'retirement' in 2012 to help coach his granddaughter's high school softball team at Trinity Christian School. He was an active member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, serving in the role of treasurer for many years. He truly enjoyed helping with the parking lot patrol for ECU home football games, collecting parking fees from fans who parked on ORLC property to attend the games. He also assisted with meal service at Joy Soup Kitchen. He was affiliated with Greenville Host Lions Club, serving in many roles in that organization over 30 years. He was named a Lifetime Lions Club member in 1983. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, American Cancer Society, Joy Soup Kitchen, or Greenville Little League.
