Ruth Ann Hatterick, 78, passed away peacefully on Thursday September 4, 2025, at her home in Cynthiana, KY. Born on August of 1947, Ruth was the oldest of three children born to the late Hiram and Mayme Wilson. She was a 1965 graduate of Milford High School, and valedictorian of a class of 250 students. Ruth also graduated with Honors from EKU in 1969.

Ruth is survived by her husband of 55 years, Walter W. "Sonny" Hatterick III; sons, Davidson "Kyle" Hatterick, Joseph Brett "Joe Brett" (Angie) Hatterick; a stepson, James "Key" Hatterick; one brother, Hiram Daryl (Sharon) Wilson; a sister, Vicki Lynn (Wayne) Warman; one brother-in-law, Robert L. Hatterick; six adoring granddaughters, Sophia Elizabeth Hatterick, Gabrielle Marie Hatterick, Olivia Anne Hatterick, Ashlyn Cynthia Hatterick, Grayce Jo Hanson Hatterick, and Piper Gayle Hutchinson Hatterick.

Ruth was a dedicated member and vice chairman of the Harrison County Board of Education, and a dear friend to so many. Her commitment to the children of Harrison County was unwavering. She believed in each and every student, and her actions reflected that belief. She served as a board member from 2016-2025, 25 years as a teacher, 4 years as an administrator, and 2 years as a Highly Skilled Educator with the Kentucky Department of Education. Ruth was very focused on curriculum, and served as the school board representative on the Comprehensive District Improvement Plan Committee. A dedicated advocate for public education, she was extremely instrumental in approving and overseeing the implementation of the new Harrison County High School.

Ruth fought tirelessly for each and every child in our school system, and she had a very strong sense of family. She was a very devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She served her community in various ways, including being an active member of Cynthiana Christian Church. Ruth's legacy is one of service, dedication and a profound love for our children. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Services for Ruth are planned for Thursday, September 11, 2025, at 11:00 A.M., at Ware Funeral Home. Visitation will be held the evening prior, Wednesday, September 10, 2025, from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M., also at Ware Funeral Home. Dr. Jim Abernathy will preside over services and burial will follow at Battle Grove Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Joe Nichols, Roboo Walker, Dr. Harry Burchett, Brent Hampton, Joey Grubb, and Jay Brown. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Harrison County Board of Education, Ruth Hatterick Memorial Scholarship, 308 Webster Ave., Cynthiana, KY 41031. I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Ruth Hatterick. Ruth was one of the first colleagues who took me under her wing during my first year as a social studies teacher at Harrison County High School. She was patient, kind, and always willing to listen as I navigated the challenges of being a new teacher. Her insights and advice on working with students and handling the many demands of education were invaluable to me.

As I read her obituary tonight, I was struck by the many remarkable achievements throughout her career-teacher, administrator, and school board member. To say that Ruth dedicated her life to education would be an understatement.

Although I moved from Cynthiana after just three years and regret losing touch, I will always remember her generosity, guidance, and passion for helping others. She leaves behind a lasting impact on her students, colleagues, and the entire Harrison County school community. She will be sorely missed.
