Cherryville - Mrs. Shirley Payne McSwain, 89, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 13, 2025 at her residence.
Shirley was born October 24, 1936 in Gaston County, NC a daughter of the late Calvin Burt Payne and Velcie Whisenant Payne. She and her husband Clyde owned and operated the Playhouse Nursery in Cherryville from 1982-1992 and was affectionately called Mawmaw Shirley by the children. Shirley also worked at the Shake Shop in Cherryville until she was 80 years old. She was a member of First Wesleyan Church in Cherryville and was a member of the Golden Oldies.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Clyde McSwain; siblings, Ray, Richard, Calvin, Bobby, Alfred, Donald, Inez Payne, Edna Russell, and Ann Biggerstaff.
Survivors include three sons, Terry McSwain and wife Tammy and Kevin McSwain all of Cherryville and Andy McSwain and wife Shenan of Shelby; two daughters, Teresa Allen and husband Mike of Cherryville and Renee Willis and husband Tony of Lincolnton; one sister Joyce Hoffman; eight grandchildren, Mark Allen and wife Jennifer, Derek Allen, Jason Allen, Tiffany Dalton and husband Brad, Terra McSwain and husband Mike Myrin, Emily Willis, Tyler McSwain and wife Olivia and Catelyn Bowen and husband Jacob; 12 great grandchildren Carson, Madeline, Sawyer, Raegan, Olivia, Deacon, Daylee, Wilder, Finn, Willa Mae, Zachary and Braelyn. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5:00PM to 7:00PM on Sunday, November 16, 2025 at Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home and at other times the family will be at the home.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00PM on Monday, November 17, 2025 at First Wesleyan Church in Cherryville with the Rev. Mark Poe officiating.
Burial will follow the service in City Memorial Cemetery in Cherryville.
Memorials may be made to First Wesleyan Church, Outreach Ministry or General Fund, 800 N. Pink Street, Cherryville, NC 28021.
