Shirley Annette (nee Halberg) Silling, beloved aunt, daughter, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 3, 2025 in Englewood, Colorado at Brookdale Senior Living.
Shirl was born on November 25, 1932 in Cottage Grove/Hastings, Minnesota. After graduating high school, she spent a year studying at Northwestern University in St. Paul where she was blessed to work with Billy Graham. Shirl was married briefly and moved to Denver early in her life. She built a fulfilling 37 year career at The Denver Post, working many respected administrative roles including President of the Executive Women International Denver Chapter. On weekends, she was known to escape to play in the Rocky Mountains with friends, she was especially fond of Breckenridge.
While fiercely independent, Shirl had a generous heart. She found joy in outings and holidays with family and friends, cuddling with her sweet pups and kitties, reading, tending to her beautiful gardens, jigsaw puzzles, and Community Bible Study where she was both a beloved core leader and a “star” volunteer for the kids craft program. She read The Denver Post cover to cover daily all the way up until the last weeks of her life and she enjoyed discussing current events. Although Shirl was never able to participate in sports during her life due to early knee issues, she was an avid sports fan: football, baseball, tennis. However, her true passion was baseball, especially the Colorado Rockies. She loved her family and friends dearly, often known to remember birthdays and special occasions with one of her beautiful handmade cards.
Shirl was a women of quiet strength and had a very deep faith in Christ. She had a great sense of humor that usually entailed a sparkle in her eye followed by a sweet smirk on her face. Shirl was preceded in death by her parents, 4 older siblings, and is lovingly remembered by her nieces, nephews, and dear friends. In her final days, she often spoke of her desire to be with Jesus in Heaven - a wish that is now fulfilled and brings joy to all who knew her.
An open house is scheduled for October 25 at 9099 Greenspointe Ct, Highlands Ranch from 1-3:00 where we will share special memories of our dear friend.
