My dear husband, best friend, and confidante passed away suddenly while on a bike ride on April 26th, 2025. He was my constant companion on every trail, trip, and Biergarten bench.
He loved sitting with family, friends, and colleagues, discussing travel, different cultures, languages, wine, food, poisonous plants, baking cake, astronomy, German brass bands, driving fast on the Autobahn, and effortlessly reciting Goethe's Faust. The conclusion of these moments often ended with Stefan saying, "We made the world a better place."
He adored his kids, Jana and Felix.
He was proud of what he built during his career and the lives that he impacted.
One of his many gifts was his ability to separate his work and home life to do the things that brought him joy hiking and biking. Through hundreds of miles, across continents, in every season, there was a mountain to go up. When the terrain became challenging, when the miles seemed endless, he'd pause, look out at the horizon, and say with quiet hope, "Da hinten werts heller" – the encouraging alpine words that things will get better.
With the greatest love, joy, and happiness I've ever experienced, I am so grateful to have shared a life together. Stefan is survived by his daughter, Jana Bechtold, his son, Felix Stemmer, his mother, Getrud Stemmer, and his brothers, Anton, Wolfgang, and Dieter Stemmer.
He lived in the Netherlands, Italy, the Czech Republic, Germany, and the U.S., and often traveled to Sweden, Japan, and China, making so many friends along the way. If you've read this far, that means you.
I ask you to share your fondest memory, a story, or a moment you experienced with Stefan in the comments. It would mean so much.
Stefan truly made the world a better place.

In diesem Falle (Bild 2) beim Pfingstfest 1981 in Griesingen.

(Foto 1, Stefan, vordere Reihe rechts)

(Foto 2, Stefan, hintere Reihe links, Christa steht daneben))

I`m terrible shocked, to hear this. I knew him already when he joined gambro in the marketing team in the 1990th. He was a skilled musician of the clarinette, he joined the MV Boll during this time. We had a "Project" to create a "Schweineliederbuch". I`m very sad, but thankfull to have shared many years with him in the Business at gambro and Joka. Rest in peace my dear friend

Dear Lisa! It´s heartbreaking news and my thoughts are with you and the family. Stefan was a dear friend and business partner for a long time and I remember him being very caring. Once we sat in the outdoor bath tub one night in Sweden, drinking beer, when Stefan and my husband found out that they were born exactly the same day. Once, me in Tel Aviv, Stefan in Germany, he save my life by delaying me. We had an argument over the phone and that saved me from being in the middle of a bomb drama. Still very vivid in my mind. My deepest condolences to you and wishes for Stefan that he is in a fantastic place today.

Through my deep friendship with Lisa, I was fortunate to be just a little part of Stefan´s big life. I got to experience his curious nature, and his generous, loving, and discerning personality, as well as witness Lisa and Stefan´s extraordinary relationship. The three of us finished a lovely meal at Sassella during one of our visits to Santa Fe and we walked out of the restaurant. I turned to Lisa and asked, "where´s Stefan?" Lisa replied, "he´s in the kitchen talking to the chef." Apparently, this was not the first time nor was it the last time that Stefan made the effort to directly compliment a restaurant chef on their food.

Stefan was also incredibly thoughtful and clever. During one May visit to Santa Fe, Lisa fell in love with big horn sheep bronze sculpture at a Canyon Road gallery but just couldn´t bring herself to make the purchase. Fast forward to December and Lisa tells me a very heavy package was delivered to their home, not to be opened until Christmas. In the quietest way, Stefan took note of the exact piece Lisa spotted during our visit in May and ordered it some six months later. Again, not the first time nor the last time.

Many great memories - hanging out in Breckenridge, Steamboat, and Winter Park during 2018 Ride the Rockies, eating black forest cake in Germany´s Black Forest on my visit to Tubingen, playing Rummikube in Yuma on a Christmas visit to the Jones´s, and enjoying the wine festival in Winter Park. And I was lucky enough to experience Stefan´s rouladen, pasta carbonara, and tiramisu.

Stefan and Lisa´s relationship was inspirational and aspirational. A relationship of ease, filled with love, mutual respect and many common interests and values. I´m grateful to have been welcomed into their lives and I will miss him a lot.

We are deeply saddened about Stefan´s passing, which came so unexpected. Stefan has been a stronghold in our company. A colleague well known and highly respected for the passion and kindness he brought to everything he did, and admired for the results that he created together with his team as a result of it. Stefan is dearly missed and we will keep his memory alive in our hearts / I will keep his memory alive in my heart. Reflecting on one special memory about Stefan it was when I walked into his office and realised the large picture he had put up behind him. During video calls, I had never been able to grasp the picture in its entirety and it changed how I experienced all following calls from there onwards. In hindsight, I would have wished to have spent more time talking with Stefan beyond our business - so I could have experienced more of his wonderful personality, as well. With deep sympathy, Christian Rebhan

Stefan Stemmer

When anyone passes, we reflect on their life, their personality, and their effects on those they loved. It is a time for remembrances and is usually somewhat expected.

When Stefan passed, it was a complete surprise since Stefan was so active and in such great general condition. He left us shocked at his passing and better for having known him.

Stefan and I shared a love of the scientific/technical worlds we both worked and thrived in. I loved talking with him about the details of the businesses he and I worked in and the challenges we found there. Stefan´s creative mind never failed to deliver new and useful approaches to the issues we discussed. I can only hope that I occasionally helped him too.

Stefan´s love for Lisa was heartwarming. Maureen (my wife) and I shared in their saga when he got his job in Toledo and when he and Lisa worked through that time of trials with skill and deep compassion. Maureen and I also got the chance to explore in and around Konstantz, Germany with Stefan and Lisa. Stefan brought us to his childhood home near Friedrichshaven and shared stories of growing up in the rural community there. While drinking wine overlooking the lake, Stefan declared the love he has for his kids and his mother.

Stefan brought us to the Oktoberfest in Stuttgart where we met his beautiful daughter, Jana, and saw Stefan truly in his element. He got us all to don the traditional German outfits and Stefan playfully sang the songs while drinking from giant German bier steins. Maureen tried to get Jana to come to the States and marry one of our sons but Jana was able to resist Maureen´s considerable charms.

While living in Colorado, I brought together several highly creative and unique men whom I believed would become friends. One is a world-class painter and sculptor. One owns a commercial fishing boat in Canada focused on catching giant tuna. The other was my German-bourne, intellectual, active, and positive friend, Stefan. The men hit it off and the level of discussions in this and other get togethers was highly entertaining as we explored topics only likely to be explored by such a creative and accomplished group as these men. Stefan was a powerful member and voice in these meetings. I miss him and I miss these get-togethers.

Maureen and I are forever thankful to have known Stefan and Lisa and we are proud they include us as their friends.

We will miss Stefan, our dear friend and neighbor. He was so interesting to chat with from our decks, while he and Lisa were relaxing after a long hike or bike ride. He made the absolute best Black Forest cake. The world has lost a brilliant, loving man too soon.
