CHESAPEAKE, VAMr. Thomas M. "Tom" Commander, Sr. passed away peacefully on Tuesday afternoon in Chesapeake. He was born July 3, 1934 in Columbia, SC to the late Carroll Danbrook and Azalee Livesay Commander. He also was predeceased by his loving wife, Joyce Katherine Commander who passed away on Nov. 22, 1996. They were married for more than 40 years. He was also predeceased by a brother, Carroll D. Commander and a granddaughter, Melissa Anne Commander. He. was a graduate of Granby High School where he was a standout guard for the Comet football team and was also educated at the College of William & Mary receiving a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration. He was a member of Great Bridge United Methodist Church until health issues would no longer allow to attend. Tom served his country proudly in The United States Navy Reserves. Mr. Commander was the owner and operator of C. S. Taylor Business Machines for many years. He enjoyed camping and surf fishing at Oregon Inlet. Tom enjoyed snow skiing and watching college football, especially Alabama and Auburn matchups. He was a loving father and grandfather and the welfare of his family was first and foremost in his life.
His love and memories will be carried on by his two sons: Thomas M. Commander, Jr. and wife, Sami and Curtis J. Commander, Sr. and wife, Melinda, both of
Chesapeake, VA; his two grandsons, Curtis J. Commander, Jr. of Colombia, South America and Danny Brunner and wife Brittany of Moyock, NC; and his four great grandchildren, Abel, Lizzie, Callie, and Faith; and his special niece, Carol Commander of Virginia Beach, VA: best friends and neighbors for many years Dan and Judy Graves of
Chesapeake, VA and a friend of nearly 30 years, Jewell Wood, Virginia Beach, VA.
The family will receive friends on Saturday Evening February 8, 2025 from 6:00 P.M. until 7:30 P.M. at Oman Funeral Home and Crematory, 653 Cedar Road,
Chesapeake, VA. His life will be celebrated on Sunday February 9, 2025 at 2:30 P.M. at the graveside in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens, 524 Cedar Road,
Chesapeake, VA 23322. Pastor Bill Wegner and Pastor Dan Steinman will officiate. The family strongly suggests contributions be made to Freedom Baptist Church, 308 Centerville Turnpike N.
