Virginia Edwina Schmitt Heckel, age 83, died August 31, 2025, under the care of Hosparus Health at Mary and Elizabeth Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. Virginia was the daughter of Edwin Frederick Schmitt and Virginia Mae Logsdon Schmitt, who predeceased her. She taught in the Jefferson County School System for 27 years, spending all but her first year as a math teacher at Lassiter Middle School. Virginia loved her students and her teaching colleagues, remaining close friends with many of them through her retirement years including Beverely Hicks, Becky West, Jane Schneider, Theresa Wyatt, and Debbie Dunn. Prior to teaching, she sold real estate for four different companies. Virginia graduated from duPont Manual High School in 1960,and from the University of Louisville in 1974 with a Bachelor of Education, later also earning her Master of Education. She was a member of Lynnhurst United Church of Christ. Virginia loved animals, was an avid reader and enjoyed listening to all genres of music, having attended over 100 live concerts. Virginia is the mother of two sons, Richard Dean Heckel (Reba) of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and Anthony Brian Heckel (Lisa) of Louisville. She has three grandchildren, Corri Heckel Bibelhauser (Josh), Allie Heckel (Elle), and Remy Heckel, and five great grandchildren, Auria Bibelhauser, Waverly Bibelhauser, Juniper Bibelhauser, Lincoln Bibelhauser, and Bellatrix Bibelhauser. Virginia's celebration of her life service will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 5th, at Joseph E. Ratterman & Son Funeral Home. 7336 Southside Dr., her visitation will be Friday, 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. prior to her service Friday, at Rattermans, with burial to take place Monday, September 8th, at 12 p.m. Noon, in Resthaven Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Kentucky Humane Society, a charitythat Virginia supported.
