Virginia "Genna" Schoolfield, 93, of Evansville, passed away Saturday, October 25, 2025, at Deaconess Hospital Midtown Campus.
Genna was born on January 4, 1932, in Evansville to the late Joseph C. and Veronica (Steckler) Mayer. She was a graduate of St. Boniface Grade School and Mater Dei High School. Genna worked for General Tire for 34 years before retiring and was a faithful, dedicated member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. Genna was inducted into the Brute` Society of the Diocese of Evansville for her service to the church. She volunteered her time to the church serving bereavement dinners, cleaning the church and for seventeen years spent an hour each Tuesday in the adoration chapel at church. Genna also enjoyed her garden and was a great cook.
Surviving are her son, Denny Schoolfield; daughter in law, Patricia Schoolfield; one brother, Joe (Mary) Mayer; grandchildren, Neil (Lauren) Schoolfield, Lee (Stephanie) Schoolfield, Jaclyn (Andrew) Marx and McKenzie Schoolfield; great grandchildren, Jaxson, Jordyn, Brylan, Landon, Hazel, Millie and Letty; as well as many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Genna was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, William F. Schoolfield in 2000; by a son, Bryan Schoolfield in 2022; by four sisters, Ruth Waters, Rosemary Kirshner, Rita Hoefling, and Carolyn Bray and two brothers, Syl Mayer and Bernie Mayer, Sr.
There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, October 30, 2025, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Rev. Jason Gries officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
Friends may visit with the family from 3:00 until 7:00 PM on Wednesday at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 W. Franklin Street, where there will be a memorial service conducted by the church at 4:00 PM. Friends may also visit with the family from 9:30 AM until service time on Thursday at Holy Redeemer Church, 918 W. Mill Road.
Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Redeemer Catholic Church.
