The Life & Legacy of
William Henry Hickson
On Thursday, May 1, 1941, William Henry Hickson was born in Richmond County, Augusta, Georgia, to the late Rev. Quincy Henry and Isabella Hickson (née Hightower), starting a life marked by hope and possibility. Bill, as he was affectionately known or "Brother" by his siblings, made a public declaration of his faith in Jesus Christ at a young age and was baptized, setting him on a path of spiritual exploration. The Hickson Family's regular attendance at Sunday services at Macedonia Baptist Church in Augusta, Georgia, during Bill's teenage years, played a significant role in shaping his values. Bill's educational foundation was laid within the Richmond County Public School System in Augusta, Georgia.
Bill's impressive 54-year career at the Philadelphia Inquirer, where he worked as a mailer and foreman alongside his brother Jimmy, speaks to his remarkable work ethic and dedication. Outside of work, Bill's love for golf and sports, including football, basketball, baseball and tennis, brought him a sense of purpose and enjoyment. In his later years, Bill's enthusiasm for football led him to regularly reach out to his brother Jimmy to share in the excitement of watching games together.
Bill was a culinary mastermind, renowned for his exceptional cooking and baking skills. He generously shared his creations with friends, neighbors, doctors, family, and anyone who appreciated a delicious cake or pie. With an impeccable sense of style, Bill consistently impressed with his elegant suits and shoes, later taking his fashion expertise to the next level by designing his own clothing, earning widespread admiration for his refined taste.
On Friday, October 17, 2025, Bill's life journey came to a peaceful close in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. He is preceded in death by his parents; Rev. Quincy H. & Isabella Hickson, Siblings; Willie Marion Matthews, Sarah Ella Hickson-Lymus, James Quincy Hickson, Benjamin Walter "Red" Hickson, Arthur Lee Hickson, Robert Lee Hickson, Henry William Hickson & George Edwards Vanderhall.
