Willie "Billy" Thompson Jr., 78, of DeWitt, VA, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2024, after a long battle with health issues, leaving a legacy of love and community spirit. He was born and raised in Dinwiddie and lived his entire life in the wonderful community of DeWitt. He is preceded in death by his loving parents, Willie, Sr., and Beulah Thompson, and his cherished friend, Georgia Wells. Billy's memory will be forever cherished by his surviving family: brothers, Edward Thompson and David Thompson and wife Jody; his niece Kelly Brookins and her husband Dave; his nephew Scott Thompson and his wife Amanda; and his great niece Bailey Brookins. To him, family always had priority and he enjoyed being a part of each of their lives.
Billy was a devoted member of Rocky Run United Methodist Church where he served as Financial Secretary for over 40 years and was an active member in the DeWitt-Rocky Run Ruritan Club for nearly 40 years.
Billy spent his career with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) working 38 years before his retirement in 2000 where his dedication and hard work were evident to all who knew him. In retirement, he continued to serve his community with the same passion and commitment that defined his life including volunteering at the Food Bank and with Grace Communities Ministries in McKenney.
Billy's warmth, kindness, and unwavering dedication to his family and community will be deeply missed. His life was a testament to the power of family, community and the impact one person can have through a lifetime of service and love.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 31, 2024 at Rocky Run United Methodist Church, DeWitt, VA from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted 11:00 a.m., Thursday August 1, 2024 at Rocky Run United Methodist Church followed by interment in the church cemetery. There will be a reception at the church following the interment.
In lieu of flowers, we kindly request that donations be made to Rocky Run United Methodist Church (14925 Glebe Rd, Dewitt, VA 23840) or to a Long-Term Health Care Fund established at Touchstone Bank (any branch) to assist Billy’s brother, Edward Thompson with his ongoing and future health care needs.
