In addition to his wife, Zack is survived by his children, Stacy Nocerino and husband, Philip of Centralia, Illinois, Cody Hawkins of Waxahachie, Texas, Stephen McElroy and wife, Hannah of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Nicholas McElroy and wife, Dacy of Washington DC; grandchildren, Nicholas Nocerino, Liliana Nocerino, Rylee Hawkins, Aria Hawkins, Deacon Hawkins, Damon McElroy, Genesis McElroy, Felicity McElroy, Barrett McElroy, Aurora McElroy, Wilder McElroy, Kaylynn McElroy, and Everly McElroy; and a close cousin, Pauleta Karnes.
In addition to his parents, Zack was preceded in death by his sister, Lana.
Zack worked as a patrolman for the Mount Vernon City Police and as a firearm instructor. He also owned and operated Hawkins Nursery and Lawn Care. Zack was a strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment and historian. He greatly enjoyed history and genealogy. Zack loved his family; they were everything to him. He was a great friend and mentor to many. Zack was lovingly known as the "Big Teddy Bear" and "Gentle Giant" because of his kind heart. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the community he served.
A Visitation will be held Friday, November 24, 2023 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. A Funeral Service will begin at 1:00 pm with Chaplain Dan Lovin officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Mount Vernon. Memorials may be made in Zack's honor to the Illinois Fraternal Order of Police.
