Barbara Burris Obituary

.

Barbara Ann Burris was born on October 27, 1936 in Jasper, Texas to Johnny and Clara Y'Barbo. She passed from this life on Sunday morning, March 15 th and stepped into glory. She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Howard Ray Burris who passed away in 1993. She is survived by her only son, John Burris of Kingwood, his wife Jenny Burris and her only grandchildren Jenna Burris and Jackson Burris.

Barbara spent 38 years as a school teacher in Newton and Beaumont. However, her teaching went far beyond the classroom. She had a lasting impact on many students who still count her today as an important influence on their lives. People were drawn to her because of her warmth and genuine concern for others. She tirelessly lived out the biblical admonition to "consider others better than yourselves."

She had a warm friendly smile that was engaging to others and often found herself to be a listening ear to anyone's trials, often ignoring her own. The legacy she leaves behind is that of a teacher who used more than the knowledge found in books, but in the simple act of loving people for who they were and allowing them into her life. In that way, she never really stopped teaching. She allowed her faith to be lived out in plain view for all to see.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday March 17 th from 6-8 pm at Kingwood First Baptist Church at 3500 Woodland Hills Dr. Kingwood, Texas 77339.

The funeral will be on at 10:00 am Wednesday March 18 th at Kingwood First Baptist Church with graveside services held later in the day at Little Hope Cemetery in Jasper, Texas.

I just found this and am so sorry to learn of her loss. We taught together at MacArthur (1966-68), and I kept in touch with her for a while after I married and moved to Florida. I remember well how thrilled she was to have John. She was a delightful lady and a great teacher.

To one of the best teachers a girl could have ever have in her life. You helped me to survive the eighth grade, acne, and boys. You will always be loved, missed and never forgotten.

Ms. Burris was my teacher also and throughout the years my brother would see her and she would ask about me. She was a kind spirit and thoroughly enjoyed being a teacher and mentor. She is one of a handful of teachers that actually cared about the students no matter what your race or rank in life. Thank you Ms. Burris for the impact you had on me and all students who came into your presence.

Our deepest sympathies and condolences to your family with the loss of our dearest Barbara.

Talking with Barbara was such a joy and inspiration. Barbara loved the Lord and her love of Christ radiated from her beautiful smile. My daughters had the honor of meeting Barbara this past November and my wife cherished her conversations about the good things in life, the important things. I met Barbara several years ago in the assisted living community through my employment and I looked forward to "coffee time" each morning with her. Conversation with Barbara was always so effortless and it was, without question, something to benefit from. Her wisdom was incomparable and it was my distinct honor to call her my friend.

Barbara reminded us of the glory of the kingdom and how she was at peace knowing that she would be with her Savior and made perfect in His glory.

Barbara's loss brings us a heavy heart but joy in knowing that her time on earth has changed many lives. She will be greatly missed.

Many blessings and love from our family to yours.
